Agreed. If I need my dog to stay put while I'm working in the garage, I pop the back door and he hops in, just lays on the seat.

He wont get out though until I drive the truck around the block

I am presently living with my parents instead of renting a place so I can save up for a down payment on a condo or a small house; My parents will pay vet bills and for anything unforeseen that comes up (health-related or otherwise), but Porter is mostly my dog and as such I have taken it upon myself to take care of him and give him attention!

At night, he is presently sleeping in a crate in my bedroom; Even though I was right there in bed, he cried, whimpered, and yelped for a good fifteen minutes before finally settling down on his first night. The second night, he only cried when left alone in the crate for a couple minutes or more; On his third night (last night), he didn't really make any noise at all!

This morning, after I took him out to pee and fed him, he followed me when I went back upstairs to get dressed, and amazingly went back into his crate and lied down inside by himself!

 

I don't think there's a set timeline, but I personally think anything under 6 months is a little young. I'm in the camp of having those hormones help growth especially on larger dogs. With our GSD, we waited until he was a year old. However with dogs from rescues, it's rare not to have them not spayed or neutred right off the bat, and if they're not, you're required to have them spayed soon after you take them home no matter the age.
