So I sold my tundra awhile back now. Still looking to replace it with something. I came across a clean 2nd gen 2015 trd sport. 109k 4.0 6 spd . Clutch is tight drives great. Clean frame , knocked with the hammer test for rust and someone gave it the undercoating of a lifetime that looks really good. Any issues I should be specifically looking for ? I only drive about 3k a year and this truck would be doing road trips with my wife plus dogs. I'm buying a side by side to take over the offroading duties that my tundra used to handle so this truck would only see fire road /mountain trail offroad use. Nothing serious. Would be towing a light bass boat and said sxs

What kind of lift is on it?

Do you like the wheels poking out?

    Where has the truck lived?

Is it rubbersied undercoat or Fluid Film / wool wax type?

Is the price right for what you've been seeing?

Great questions, I have two things to throw in.

    1. I have a double cab and I think a passenger and 2 dogs would feel packed. Not sure what size dogs you have but I think they’d be pretty crammed in the jump seats of an extended cab.

    2. That truck looks clean but be aware that Super White paint has an extremely prevalent flaking problem. This thread is from the 3rd Gen section but the problem extends back to many years of 2nd gens.

Don't mind wheel poke , my old truck I had the same way
Not sure , good question need to find out

No it's an industrial application like por15 and the like.

Yes it's been consistent with age/ condition /mileage in my area

Good to know about the paint. My tundra was super white as well, 2017, it didn't have flaking issues but seemed more prone to rock chips than previous vehicles. This one the paint seemed to be void of defects even rock chip variety for the most part

I should have specified. Our furry friends are corgis lol they fit nicely anywhere for the most part. Even our fat one (50lbs she's the brown one. She more portly now than that pic LOL) I call this their "boy band pic" also the white one DOES NOT like car rides lol so it's mainly the other two

Tacomas aren't great for towing... especially if you are used to a Tundra..

Well, technically I'm used to a freightliner LOL but yea I know. The max load I'd have on it towing would be 3500lbs. The bass boat is aluminum and the sxs plus trailer comes in at a little under 3k. Bass boat setup is maybe 3200lbs. I no longer tow heavy like I did with my tundra

I tow a 3500lb boat/trailer with mine and it’s no problem. Should be no problem towing a s/s.
My only advice is get a double cab not an extended.I know some people are crazy over extended cabs but the room in the back is really small , not very useful or practical. You don’t get a lot more room with the double cab but you do get more and can even carry passengers. Even your 3 doggos will be cramped in an extended cab. Your dogs will thank you if you get a double cab.

read into the RA60F. They're not perfect.
SAI system on the post facelift.

I don't know how the anti rollover works or if it can be disabled. Glad my pre facelift doesn't have that.

Sport you get a strong 8.4 diff, and a deleted LSD with a fake LSD that's not an LSD, but basically ESP that Toyota somehow says is LSD

frame rust, make sure it's good things done to it
    and not bad things
certain coatings are the equivalent of putting duct tape on it

    does the white have issues
sure, but at this point every paint is
my silver is. I'd rather have white to start. Whether good or bad shape. It's not new.

Folks say can't tow. It's a body on frame truck with a hitch and tow rating.
    Not sure what they mean.
Wasn't planning on moving 40,000lbs at a construction site like you would with a diesel 3500.

Ra60f has throwout bearing issues, but it's not catastrophic. I like the URD solution and will be installing on mine when it's time.

The sport package makes zero sense to me. The OR you at least get something that does SOMETHING. The E-locker can handle 37+ tires, it's not like it's weak.

Jump on it. It sounds like a good truck. My 2014 is a 6 spd manual and I'm getting ready to roll over 160,000 on the stock clutch. If that truck feels good and tight, it probably is.

Yea most oem clutches can last well past 200k. I'm at 218k on original. I've read plenty of people going 250k.

Sounds like you'd use your truck similar to how I use mine. The only concern I have, speaking from personal experience of about 6x XC road trips, is fuel economy. That's personal level of tolerance though. On heavy 10ply tires, I'm getting about 16 average on highway trips. If you're someone who needs more range, just take that into consideration.
Otherwise, truck sounds great....go for it.

I think the towing thing comes about due to people thinking trucks should accelerate towing the same as they do empty do 80 mph etc lol I drive a semi for a living so I know how things built to tow , tow well, and tbh anything under a one ton doesn't tow "well" lol 3500 lbs however I am confident a 4.0 tacoma can do with ease.

Yea that's of zero concern to me. My tundra which I used the same way was 11.5 mpg on 37s so 16 would be a joy lol plus I only drive a out 3k miles a year in my vehicle everything else we do in my wife's lexus

if I were going to use it the way I used my tundra I would totally agree. I had 37s and a eaton locker bumpers skids the works . This truck is pretty much dirt roads , road trips and to tow my toys . Tbh ill probably install a helical gear lsd instead of a locker on it just because of the snow where we live. I probably wouldn't seek out a trd sport but since this one checks all the boxes I won't turn it down lol20230315_133512.jpg

Well ladies and gents I am now a taco owner! Bought the truck yesterday. My wife went and picked it up as I'm at work in Cali but super excited to get home and drive it

that’s good to know. Heard the 8” is weaker and was glad my truck came with 8.4” to put Truetrac and 4.88 but I guess that’s not true.

haven’t heard much issues from Tacoma but plenty of 4Runners for some reason.

you’ll know by checking history but if it’s truly a Southwest truck there you go shouldn’t be any rust. Thats how mine came.

Great Truck. Congrats! I think the 040 paint failures only impacted the Double Cab configurations on the 2nd & 3rd gens. The Access Cabs should be okay. They start to fail on the DC's around the back passenger windows and under the hood on the inner fenders.

One thing that will take while getting used to is the fact it's called an "access cab "lol coming from tundra land I forget that double cab in a tacoma and double cab in a Tundra mean opposite things lol
