I have put thought into converting my double cab 2wd taco into 4wd down the road once it's paid off. Is there anyone with first hand experience doing this? Is it a fairly smooth conversion or would you recommend trading in for a factory 4wd when the time comes? Trying to get some information before modding my current taco too much. If I have to trade it in (in the future) then I don't want to lose all my mod value.

Easy to do, like others have said: dealer swap.

I dont think we've seen 3rd gens do this yet, most are in warranty, stuff like harness's and salvage tacomas are in short supply.

Yea I’d just trade your truck in and get a 4wd. It’s not worth the headache for something that’s so easily available.
It would be so much time and money spent trying to get stock Toyota stuff you could pay the difference in truck values or build a nice 4wd vehicle.

Check out the 2nd gen 4x4 conversion. Many of them said it’s doable for the 3rd gen because it is a very similar truck. I had a 2017 2x4 and want to make it 4x4. Called many shop and many of them said for the 3rd gen it’s better if you trade/sell it. I told that to the 2nd gen group and they drill on me lol. But, I haven’t seen any 3rd gen made a successful conversion yet. Maybe you can ask the group in the 2nd gen to help you out.

About an hour ago I traded in my 2018 Tacoma with 65xxx miles and almost got what I paid for it when I bought it new in 2018. I would look at what you might be able to trade yours in for.
