Possible cat failure at 40K

Were you able to get temp readings around the secondary cats? Cats usually clog from the engine burning excessive amounts of oil. But, they could fall apart internally and clog.

 

No, I don’t have a temp reader.

 

Dealer says the Cat is shot and will be replaced under emissions warranty.

 

Reminds me of a train story that I read. A train was full of brand new Nissan Titans and thieves cut off the CAT on every truck with a portable Sawzall. They didn't realize the thefts until the trucks were ready to be unloaded. The obnoxious noise was a dead giveaway.

Ask if they can hazard a guess why no CEL popped?

Also, I doubt you 'did' anything to cause it. As in it won't be clogged in the traditional sense, the catalyst honeycomb will be all broken in pieces and clogged the pipe outlet.

You might ask them to pull the muffler and see if some shakes out of there too.

 

I will. I assume no codes because there are no sensors before or after the secondary cats.

 

I'd still be curious as why it clogged so soon, something caused it.

 

Apparently there is a TSB for the welds failing inside... according to the service writer.

 

Whelp... more issues. After replacing the Cat and the Manifold the issue was still there. Dealership is now saying that the muffler has come apart inside and that was the root cause of all the problems. I do have the TRD exhaust so the service writer claims he is trying to get Toyota to cover everything under a “good faith” thing. I’ll post again with further updates.

 

Hmmm interesting I know you were just relaying info they were giving you, but I was still calling BS on cat failure that early.

Muffler is down-stream of the cat - it would be impossible for it to clog the cat. The other way around, is what happened here. Careful of the dealership’s wording

Unless of course the muffler was what was clogged to begin with, and the cat’s replacement was unnecessary

 

Op is there any possibility you hit something off-roading? Muffler?
