Getting some mildew smell running my AC lately. Granted, the humidity hasn’t been that high here and thus no reason for drainage to occur. Anyways, if it is a simple leaf/debris clog, pushing air at the drain tube didn’t do anything. If it’s built up mildew junk over the years, just how far up the drain tube should I use a wire hangar to possibly break thru? I only had a 6” screwdriver and I got no resistance. Does it take probing longer than that? 12 inches or more? I took off the squirrel cage blower inside the cab and felt up inside. No leaves or dead mouse. I’m thinking a built up mold/mildew clog causing the sudden musty mildew smell? I’m just used to seeing some kind of drainage despite the humidity not being super high. And why the musty mildew smell now? Don’t fret and spray some Lysol thru the air intake?

This time of year from all the slop dragged into the truck and having the freezing and thawing it smells like Mold till the weather gets warm.

If it is indeed blocked and you run the defrost all the time like me you should have your right floor very wet.

Unless your in the Desert .

I AM in a desert climate sorta, So. Calif. Stlll...my drain tube has’t dripped one drop in over a year. The mildew smell is starting to bug me. I’m simply asking how far up the ying yang poking with a wire hangar do I have to go to get to a possible clog? I only got about 6” using what I had. Funny sexual inuandos aside.

Could be an easy 12" to 14"

If the blockage is at the end of the Hose

You could try and blow compressed air up the tube to clear it out, thats what I usually do if there is blockage and then the water and gunk comes pouring out, granted I'm in New Orleans so its always humid

Careful with this technique; the air pressure could pop the drain hose off inside the assembly, causing a big headache. Never try this on scuttle drains.

I'm talking a quick 1 or 2 second burst of air, not sure what a scuttle drain is

I wouldn't recommend blowing mud on and into evaporative coil.

Cowl drains, sunroof drains, etc. if not on the Tacoma, then on other cars. You can blow them loose or rupture them in a difficult to access spot, often without knowing right away. Can lead to damage of stuff that isn’t supposed to get wet.

it is easy to take the blower motor out and feel inside the evaporator case for debris.

I made a post a while back called "Why you shouldn't park under a tree". I have taken the evaporator case out of the truck and diasassembled it. There are some pictures so you can see what it is you are looking at before you start poking around with a coat hanger.

Altho a little chilly to do so, a mechanic said to crank up the AC with doors open early in the morning when the humidity is usually over 40 percent. I’ll try doing that to confirm it’s blocked before poking a coat hanger up the tube. As mentioned, I already removed the cage blower and found no debris while feeling around the best I could. I couldn’t actually feel the drain hole tho. Maybe out of reach.
