So my new 2017 SR access cab's tach starting acting up 2 weeks ago (ticking). Didn't do it during the test drive. Took video and went to the dealer. Service advisor watched the video and tech duplicated it. Due to the d.o.l., they had to order the cluster and keep my rig....that was 2 weeks ago. Dealership said no eta , part is back ordered. The problem is they didn't have a tacoma loaner, just a corolla. What are your thoughts about contacting Toyota about some kind of compensation like a platinum warranty? I don't use the truck for work, but I bought a truck for a reason..yard work etc.

    Thanks for the help

Seems only fair.3RD Gen owners continue to waste their valuable time dealing with all of the shenanigans.

You can ask but why would they?

Why did you let them keep it?

They will not extended your warranty for this. Be patient, lots of people some times have to wait months for parts at our dealerships. It's just how it is

It sucks but the dealership is providing service under warranty contract. They are providing a loaner, no where does it say the loaner has to be of equal nature. Also, a part being on back order is part of life. The clusters in production are going into new vehicles, and they don´t just have a lot of extra ones lying around at the moment. Also, if I am correct, which I may not be, but the cluster has to be ordered with your current odometer reading, which means they have to program it. If this is correct, that would also answer the below question, Why did you let them keep it? You are lucky that the tech was able to duplicate it and they are getting it taken care of, you could have gotten the line ¨could not duplicate¨.

Pretty piss poor actually. A product should not be released, retail, if it cannot be supported. That is just common decency. I agree, though, a Platinum warranty is a stretch. They may do something small for you though.

Stuff happens, I wouldn't expect an extended warranty. They should've given you a truck as a loaner though imo.

Why would they keep it for a malfunctioning tachometer?, that doesn't effect anything that would harm the truck while driving it until the part came in...not sure I understand y the dealer kept the truck?

The tach is part of the whole gauge cluster, including center LCD odo. They have to keep truck, so new programmed cluster matches mileage on truck

So if anything goes wrong with my truck and the manufacturer puts me in a rental and fixes it, I should feel entitled to a free platinum warranty as well?..

The Platinum "insurance policy" is a costly addition. But then, the cost of fixing this electronics monstrosity will be absolutely crippling when things start going.

Thought all that info was stored in the ECU not in the cluster? People have been swapping clusters for years on 2nd gen without programming them.

GM had tons of issues with stepper motors in clusters, they ended up extending the warranty on just that component. I had the cluster in my 2004 Silverado replaced at 39k under the warranty extension that took it from 35k to 50k on just that component.

If I remember correctly @smitty99 had his cluster changed out and they held his truck due to programming the mileage.
