Possible to change default from DRCC to CC cruise control?

I have had my 2019 Tacoma TRD Sport for one month now. It of course, came with the highly-touted DRCC or Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. I HATE IT! the dang thing wants to hit the brakes half a block away from someone stopped at a stop sign ahead of me! And if there are parked cars along the side, as I approach a curve, the dang thing once again, wants to hit the brakes. My brakes are gonna wear out at this rate! So I immediately looked at the owners manual, and found that when actuating the cruise control by pushing the button on the cruise control switch [stalk?], the default when pushing it, is that it immediately turns on the DRCC. Now, according to the instructions, by holding the button for 2 seconds, it then activates regular or CC Constant Cruise control, or the cruise control we all have known and loved for decades. In doing this though, I have found that I have to basically keep an eye on the middle display screen, until it goes by the "radar on" display and goes to CC display, when I then know, that I can activate CC or regular old cruise control, which by the way, works great! SO, what I want to know, is there a way to switch the default, so that when I just push and release the cruise control button, that it defaults to CC instead of DRCC?

Don't use cruise control on city streets, like the rest of us. Problem solved. The rest of us, much safer. Thanks.

Actually those of us who use cruise control everywhere are much safer drivers, including city streets. I set my cruise control at the speed limit, keep my eyes on my surroundings, not the instrument cluster and don't have to worry about paying voluntary taxes.

Oh there will be some mods all right
This^^ I set my cruise on city streets so I don't speed and can watch driveways, crosswalks, etc.

    From the manual:

Interesting the responses. Serious question. Do you have a handicap where you can't modulate your accelerator pedal? Or is modulating the pedal too tiring?

Man snickers, a little much, don't ya' think? As others have also mentioned, using cruise control around town is a good thing, in my town, at least. Obviously, if one is driving around town and there is a stop sign every block, then of course it doesn't make sense. But, in my town where the speed limit is 25mph all over town, and the cops are stupid, using cruise is a way to make sure that I am not going over the speed limit. Of course, if there are people out there who are perfect [and I am not naming names or aliases here] who can actually maintain a perfect speed all over town, then you do not have to use cruise control if you do not want to. But believe me, it has saved me more than once with the stupid cops we have here. And I go back to my honest and simple question, which was, is there a way to change the default from DRCC to CC? Good honest question and one which deserves a good and not wise-crack answer...

To answer your question, no... outside of disabling the PCS radar system, the cruise control will always default to DRCC mode. Only recommendation is to set the distance to short mode and continue to use default system, or establish the habit of switching to standard CC mode.

The over sensitivity you describe may be solved with a recalibration of the radar, suggest you bring up this issue with a service advisor on your next ToyotaCare visit.

Subd...glad I’m not the only one using cruise off the hwy. I find it also keeps “Shifty” the transmission at bay too. I can keep a steady foot but it seems “shifty” can feel minor movements of my foot more than I can or that I’m aware I’m even doing on a dead flat smooth road.

No, default is DRCC. Just hold the bottom for 2 seconds. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

Thanks. I already knew about the ability to change distances of the radar, but setting to any of the distances doesn't seem to make any difference. I mean, the DRCC does work as intended, but man, it will wear out my brakes if I continue to use it as it is right now. And it is very annoying to have it put the brakes on, when I am half a block away from the stop sign, where there is one car sitting. When you are only going 25mph, I think with a half a block, I have plenty of time to brake, without the annoying DRCC doing it for me.

Some of y'all I swear. Gotta be judgy on simple questions.

Ya, hold the CC button a few more seconds and DRCC will change to standard CC. You'll see the green icon change and then it just works like regular CC. I personally hate DRCC. It's not even close to how I drive and I'm a conservative driver.

Not at all saying I am perfect. Just don't like having a heavy vehicle going on its own without my instant feedback. I feel uncomfortable doing it even on interstates. Terrified at the prospect of people doing it on city streets and the prospect of driver less cars. But, in your case situation consider myself educated.

It isn't that it's not "easy peasy", but annoying to have to hold the button for 2 seconds and then have to watch the middle display screen, until it shows that the CC is activated. I have a Sienna and I can hit the button and set at almost the same time, and my CC is then set. I do not have to wait 2 seconds, make sure it is in CC mode, and then hit set. OK, 2 seconds doesn't sound like a lot of time, but it is when you are driving down the street, and have to look at a display in order to make sure you are finally in CC mode instead of DRCC mode. Very annoying...

To me, your system seems to be over sensitive... have the dealership check it out on your next visit. My 2018 works fine around town, as well as on the hwy.

I don’t like DRCC either. In fact, the only thing I distrust more than DRCC is other drivers. So I avoid getting on the freeway if I can.

First world problems. It literally takes less then 2 seconds longer. Push the bottom vs push the button for 2 seconds. Everything else is exactly the same.

As far as how abrupt the truck brakes and accelerates I agree. It’s not nearly as smooth as my wife’s Subaru Outback.

I wish you could lower the speed limit that CC will engage down to 25 MPH. Also, I don't understand all the CC hate. If you don't want to or can't use it around town then don't. I do agree that DRCC could be better but lets just be thankful that Toyota gave us a workaround so we don't have to use it.

What we really need from the manufactures is a device that kills your cellphone when the wheels are turning.

Yeah, because drivers are using phones.

How about actually having a conversation with the people in the vehicle.
