do you chew on your keys when you're not using them?

I'm still using the original key for my 86 LC.. not that it has a chip or anything and can easily make a dup, but damn...

Not too good for when working on it either. You are trying to get a bolt on and its giving you trouble, and you think, come on you sucker, you better start.

You dont know this place very well.
You can get a replacement key with chip for a lot less than 500 bucks. Just stay away from the dealer. Buy a key off Ebay, have a hardware store cut the key and order the programming tool or look in your local threads for someone who has one and reprogram the new key.

@NoOne , bite the bullet and go lexus card. It's expensive but nice, coupled with touch entry on both sides it's a win. Expensive win, but win.

I THINK 2019 is still using H keys. Another alternative is to buy all the H-keys on ebay you want, for like ~$20 each, get them cut for ~$5 each, buy a dongle for techstream for less than $50, and keys galore.

    JaCado beat me to it...

I was old school like that once. I almost didn't buy my first tacoma because it had so many bells and whistles, and I was surefire convinced that more features means more stuff that can break. The vehicle before my first taco was an '08 dodge bought off the commercial fleet lot. It was gloriously equipped with a six-on-the-floor shifter, crank windows, vinyl bench seats, hard rubber floors. Air conditioning and a radio with an AUX jack were my two luxuries. Not a stitch of fabric or color screens to be seen anywhere, it was perfect for a beach truck.

When I got my '16 taco I had serious remorse for a week. It was too much. Infotainment screen? Steering wheel controls? daylight running lights? Floor Mats?? This wasn't a manly truck I thought, this is a grocery-getting abomination. Then, slowly, the joys of a push button start finally revealed. I stopped worrying about my keys, because my keys never leave my pocket. Every morning I pick up my wallet and key from my end-table, and every evening I pull them from my pocket and place it back on the table. I don't think about them in-between anymore. Don't have to.

On the previous truck my ex lost the old-fashioned keys somewhere on a jogging trail. That was expensive. We were out of town, the spare key was an eight hour round trip to retrieve via rental car. It took a locksmith to retrieve my wallet to pay the locksmith, taxi, and car rental. Plus $100 to replace the key. The keyless fob now sits secure in my backpack when I hike, don't have to dig for them when its time to go home. As long as Im wearing the pack, the door opens and the truck starts. Its amazing. The ex on the other hand sits securely in the land of I-don't-care-where.

Give the new tech a chance. You won't know how you lived without it ;):transformer:

Buy the key blanks, take them to Toyota with your registration and have them cut and program them. I paid $80 for 2 keys to be cut and programmed for my Yaris. It's not as expensive as you're making it out to be.

Funny that.... I now grab my house door and expect that it will just open. It doesn't. I now need a proximity deadbolt too.

Thanks Bumble Bee Tuna and Rock Lobster! I admit to being old school, as Bumble Bee Tuna said, and as for Rock Lobster, I much appreciate your comments, as I was thinking the same things you pointed out, when I actually got into this new 2019 Tacoma that I have been looking at. I mean, as you said, everything is electronic and on the steering wheel, it seems! But, at the same time, there were some cool gadgets in there that I could see as being beneficial too. It was funny, in that when I left that dealership, saying I would "think about it", I got back into my 96 Tacoma, with its roll up windows, and seemingly no electronics, and the difference was deafening. But, my truck started up and I drove right out of the dealership, with the $32,000 that I was going to have to put out for the new truck, still in my pocket! While that aspect makes me happy, still, I look at pictures I took of that new Tacoma, and I wonder what I should do. As I mentioned, I don't NEED a new truck, but man, I REALLY WANT one of those NEW TACOMAS!

89785-0D170 is an H key that doesn't have any buttons. SHOULD be able to program and cut that key to your truck. They're cheap... like $50 CDN

Has anyone ever had a key that just wore out? I had a 15 year old car before the tacoma, driven virtually every day and the key never wore out.

Seems like you're trying to figure out how to future proof something that has virtually no chance of actually happening (lost key is leaps and bounds more likely).

A local hardware store has a sign that can make keys with chips, and am now curious at their cost.

This. Not a bad investment if you have a space in your wallet, or at the least keep one in your house.

I need investigate if my 2018 will work with the H key.

I'd like a couple just for unlocking the door. Can't take the factory key with you when you're surfing.

I was surprised that the truck will lock the doors with the key inside. It won't if it's in the ignition, but will if you just lay it on the seat. I tested it out the day I got my truck.

    **EDIT**
Just called my dealership, and the parts dude said they would make me a key to just unlock the door for around $15. I asked him...$15 and not $50 right. He said around $15 cut.

Getting a key to unlock the door is nothing. A toyota blank at the local hardware store will suffice for that. But the problem is getting additional keys to start the truck. And for those who wonder about my keys wearing out; it is not exactly the key that wears out, but the IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER. As I said, i have replaced mine twice, meaning I am now on my 3rd ignition lock cylinder. And since I get the cylinder that you can program the lock so it will use your original key, that is why i need to have the ability to be able to get additional keys, so that I can keep at least one original, just for making copies of in the future, when the ignition cylinder invariably wears out.
