First let me start of with i have a 98 honda civic and i am a carpenter/painter/woodworker and carrying around projects and tools in my car has been a huge pain. So i've decided to upgrade to a truck, i found a 5spd 03 extracab with the 3.4l and the trd/sr5 package with 68,000 miles for 13,000. This seems like a good price and i test drove the truck today and everything felt solid, the frame seemed to have some surface rust on it, which i've read could be a big problem. I just wanted to know what kind of things i should be looking for that might be specific to these trucks or any truck for that matter before buying it. I will be going back tomorrow to haggle with the guy to see if i can get it a little lower.
    Thank in advance guys

    Is that truck a 4x4?

I think you can only get TRD/5 speeds with 4x4.

Only advice I can give you is give the truck a good look through and get the car fax.

Yeah it's a 4x4 and the rust didnt seem to bad i could easily scratch it off, so it should be ok. I was just wondering if there are any other main things to look for besides the rust. But i'm definatly gonna get the carfax, thanks for the advice.

Id go for it it seems like a good price. but def, get the carfax. Frame rust on the '01-'04 Trucks mean that they replace the frame. so i would not worry about the rust..

Toyota sent out letters about it a few years ago. But if your worryed about it take it to a toyota dealership and have it checked out. They should do it for free.

I bought it new in 03. Last year I got a letter from Toyota with details about the potential rust. If the seller is the original owner then they also have this letter.
I remember something about the warranty extending for the life of the truck and to all successive owners. It seemed to me a very upstanding gesture on the part of Toyota. Unfortunately I am on the road and won't have access to details of the letter until Thursday.
Good luck--still love my truck like day 1!
