Hey everyone, I currently own a 2015 TRD Off-Road, Double Cab. The future of my job has come into question and I will probably need to sell my truck for something cheaper. My local Toyota dealer is advertising a 2004 TRD Off-Road, Double Cab, with 150k miles for $12k. Should I make the switch so long as I can get them to pay off the remaining amount on my '15 so I come out even? I've also been thinking I want a regular cab truck, but I would want a V6 4x4, so I would have to make the switch to a full size truck. Thoughts?

Price seems a little steep for that many miles.

I know I haven't been able to find a Reg Cab V6 2nd Gen. The 1st Gen I found is a Double Cab w/ OR pkg.

Only from 95-97. You could get it with a 5 speed too.

12k is too steep for a first gen with that many miles, a girl on here a couple days ago was looking at one for $13k with only 78k miles on it.

As for your question, if it's a financial move then it would make sense to trade down for something you can outright buy and not have to make payments on. But the downside is that you're assuming a lot more risk in taking on an older vehicle maintenance and possibly repair-wise. I bought an '04 in March that only had 24k miles on it, but I got a P0171 lean fuel system code a few weeks later and had it not been for the extended warranty I bought on the truck as well, I'd be out well over a grand in repair costs (took them forever to figure out what it was).

Just something to consider, I'd hold out for something with less miles than the one you're looking at. Sorry to hear about your job, good luck with everything!

Thanks for your response! I agree with the maintenance part, its a touch decision, especially since I've put money into my truck for mods, and stealerships won't take that into consideration. A smaller, personally owned business might look at it differently, though. I've thought about refinancing it to get lower monthly payments, but that's going to send my APR through the roof. Thanks again for your feedback, and hopefully I won't have to jump ship so early.

If you do end up going to gen 1, sell your truck privately, pay off the loan, and purchase the gen 1 from a private seller. You will end up with the most money in the end. In California, I found a 04 with 36,000 miles on it for $13,000 cash, but it sold within an hour of posting. If you are patient you can find a nice gen 1, low mileage, and probably come out with cash in hand.

    only $13k??

My '04 with 24k miles on it was listed for $20k by the Toyota dealer I bought it from, got them down to $17k though cause they knew they were crazy asking 20 lol. Still, $13k for that one is a steal, no wonder it sold so quick. I usually see them with closer to 100,000 miles on the odometer for that much (in the SoCal area)

My advice is don't be in a rush. When I Bought My 03 It Took My About 2 Months To Find "the one" but it was worth the search. Look everyday and be ready to lock it down when you find it. They are out there.

I almost flew to las vegas, nevada to pick up a 2004 2x4, with top of the line LEER shell carpeted, 56,000 miles, automatic though (i like manual), SR5/TRD with brand new tires for $13,900.

The one for $13k had a small dent on the rear bumper, otherwise same specs as above (no shell) and was located in Marin County, CA.

I ended up getting my 99 with the supercharger, 130K miles, very clean condition, new tires, for $8k cash. Threw a $500 leer camper with yakima racks on yesterday. I am all about just being patient on these things.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
2nd gen regular cabs never had a V6 option, only years you could get those are 1995-1997 and they are very rare. I think it was a dumb move on Toyota's part dropping that package, regular cabs probably would have sold much better had they kept the option there.

As for making the switch, I say go for it! I did and do not regret it at all, I think the 1st gens are a much better truck quality wise. I'm afraid Toyota quality had dropped considerably in recent years, they are starting to pull a lot of GM moves on their newer stuff. More concerned about profits than customer satisfaction, that's what sank GM.
