Possibly Trading for 4Runner

All depends on what your situation is. My daily driver is a BMW X1. Love the car but getting a little long in the tooth. We use the truck on the weekends for errands and a little off roading but nothing too serious. If it were up to me, I would sell both and just get a Land Cruiser. Pay the ton for it and probably never have to buy a car again for the rest of my life. My friend did that. His first car was a LC. We all thought he was nuts. 20 years later he still has it and it is still perfect. But then again ... the wife vetoed that plan. . She is now leaning toward a Genesis ... and I can't really argue.



But I have to say I saw one of these and really thought it looked sharp. Yes, it is not for pure Overlanding. I get that. But for the kinds of light off road we do in the North East, it would be more than plenty fine.

The good thing for me is the wife loves the Tacoma. She keeps pushing me to add more mods. So, I am lucky that way.

 

I've seen those figures before and something about it is off. @ 6'1, I can comfortably sit behind myself in the 4runner and still have ample knee room left whereas I can't do that in the Tacoma. Honestly doesn't even feel that close.

 

Interesting. I double checked on the Toyota site just now and those are the numbers. But then again, I have not sat in the back of a 4Runner. So I am not sure what the issue is.

Of course, this is why the OP should sit in the back seat of all of them, including the RAV, to get the real world fit and feel.

Yeah, we both commute to work, so the LC isn't realistic. My wife is a teacher and I'm a corrections officer (in school to become a teacher), so maybe in the future one big car would work for us. But I'm hoping to persuade her with the COROLLA - RAV4 trade idea. Then I get to keep my dream truck.

 

While I love my little access cab Tacoma (I’m a single dude so don’t really need any space). If I had a family I’d probably get a RAV4. My dad is on his 10th one because he drives 60k miles a year for his job on muddy, rutted Ohio back roads and it’s the perfect combo of being capable and comfortable. He has sent me pictures of him in some crazy mud and he always gets out no problem lol. I took his last one on a 10,000 mile trip out west this summer and, even though he doesn’t have a TRD, it handled all the fire service roads and light trails I threw at it.
I recently took it on a 5,000 mile road trip with 3 other buddies (all at least 6’ tall) and we were all super comfortable. They really are great little vehicles.

 

i started looking at rav4's randomly today. i've been fighting it, but you can get them pretty loaded out these days

 

a couple years ago we almost got a Subaru cross trek and got the Corolla instead. RAV4 seems like a more reliable value keeping cross trek.

 

Resale value is excellent like most Toyota’s. My old man trades them in at 60k-80k miles (or every 1-2 years) and never loses much money on them lol.

Get her in the RAV4. Talk to her about safety, safety, safety. And the extra room for the new baby.

Would a responsible mother of two want to be driving around in a Corolla? Of course not! A RAV4 is the perfect car for young children and safety.

I wonder what the trade looks like from a Corolla to a RAV4. Probably bad but not terrible. And you get to keep the Tacoma.

 

Yea, I don't by it either. I fit my two kids with car seats in my DCSB. Once you can turn the car seats to be front facing, you gain a lot of room. Once you get to boosters, you get even more room for the kids. And once you ditch the car seats altogether, you again get more room.

I started with two in rear facing car seats. Now I have one front facing and one in a high back booster. Soon I'll have my rear seat back.

 

Not sure what the actual numbers are....but my perception is that my buddy's '19 4Runner has more leg room than my Tacoma.

That said....my wife bought a '19 Corolla a couple of years ago. One of the things she liked about it was the rear leg room. If memory serves me right....it's got something like 42+".....a lot for a car of it's size.

 

I just look at the numbers but it is clear that perception may be the better part of reality when it comes to this stuff !

For example, the Corolla has a leg room of 32 inches according to Toyota ("Toyota says there are about 38 inches of headroom and about 32 inches of legroom in the rear seats.").

That said, I have no doubt you felt like there was more leg room in the Corolla. It is why the numbers are the numbers, of course, but sitting in the car speaks volumes.

 

I grew up sharing the middle of a bench seat of a '72 F100 with my brother, it was all good as long as Dad didn't have to get into reverse with the column shifter. Then we upgraded to a Corolla wagon and we figured we had hit the jackpot..

My inlaws exclusively drive Pilots because they want to have 8 seats- even if half of them are empty all the time..I don't get it.

 

That seemed a lot less room than I remembered. So I went and looked it up. It shows 42.4" of rear leg room. The current Corolla has quite a bit less. Maybe that's the one you were looking at.

Yeah...the '20+ is definitely shorter on leg room. I'm a touch over 6' tall and the amount of room in the back of her car is amazing......for what it is.

 

I'll also add...those numbers could have been for the Corolla Hatchback too. When my wife bought her '19 the current Hatch was out. The rear leg room was horrid. Completely turned my wife off on it. Same for the HR-C.....zero rear room. Both of those vehicles were at the top of the list if her until she saw that.

It was right before the new '20s popped and they made her a stupid deal on a '19.

 

Yeah, I recall wondering how the numbers were derived back when I was cross shopping them because the 4runners back seat does feel roomier despite #s being almost similar. Attached is a pic of the leg room in the back of my 2020 with the front seat adjusted to how I drive. I recall doing the same in the Tacoma and feeling cramped. Difference definitly seemed more than 0.9".

 

Funny how that works out. I was really happy with the Tacoma 2020 DC -- especially after coming from a 2005 AC. But then I sat in the Tundra and it felt like I was on a boat that thing was so huge. But then I look at the numbers and the rear seat in the Tundra is only 34, I think. Like you it definitely seemed bigger.

In any case, OP, you need to let us know what you decide ... er ... what the boss decides. I am hoping to see a picture of your Tacoma next to a shiny new RAV4.
