My son wrecked my ‘06 last weekend. The truck was towed off; with just liability insurance I de died to truck the vehicle back home three hours from the accident site. Apparently the oil pan was compromised and the engine oil drained out.

The driver airbag went off and so I am wondering if that resulted in engine shutdown? What should I have done to determine if the engine is ok, assuming I choose to repair it? Besides installing a new pan and pouring oil in ;)

Engine will stay running, typically Toyotas can run for about 3-5 minutes and still have life in them. So as long as they turned the truck off eventually, its likely fine.

I would 100% put a pan on it and try.

At least see if the crankshaft turns with a wrench I guess..

Other than that you won't be able to tell much without putting a pan on it

    +1

This all boils down to how soon the engine was shut down after accident.

Oil and pan is probably the quickest way.

Airbag deployment will not shut down the engine. :)

    Pan and send it.

My kids will never drive my vehicles....well except for the crawler.

It's supposed to shut off the fuel pump, it's in the owners manual.

I’ve seen them deploy and stay running, this is news to me, but it makes so much sense. Fuel pump especially.

The few I’ve seen were curtains, and seat belt squibs, both roll over detection by error.

It doesn't give any parameters other than "if an airbag deploys" so who knows but it is in there.

Ford for a long time used an inertia switch which was basically a chunk of metal stuck to a magnet that when subjected to a significant shock would fall off the magnet and break the fuel pump circuit, those had to be physically reset with the button on top. Now they use the airbag module to send a collision message like everyone else.

Yeah, that Ford inertia switch caused a lot of cars to be towed that didn't need to be towed.

I've reset a few of them but you usually have to hit one hell of a bump to trip it.

The Crown Vic and Ranger all had them as far as I know until they quit making them around 2012.
