Took a little drive up to Fort Collins, Colorado Thursday morning to grab this big blue beast and leave behind old red, the Turner Taco. While I was close by I went up north a bit to Rapid City, South Dakota to do some business and see friends. May as well go visit the Big Giant Heads while in town, find a fun rock to climb on just down the road and check out Glendo Lake in Wyoming on the way back home. Overall a nice, relaxing 4 days, 2114 miles and 1503 of those on the new truck. I'll work on better pics in better places soon.

I spend numerous years working IN old growth in this region........
Age of the fallen tree? Educated guess: 800-1200 years.
Judging by the vegetation growing immediate to this tree (windfall), its likely been on the ground 10 - 50 years. The thing is, if you kick through the bark and the sapwood, the heartwood under it will be absolutely sound and solid; no rot at all. Great stuff. You can't buy lumber milled from old growth redwood anymore. Of the existing old growth redwood forests which existed at the time when it was starting to be logged back in the 19th century, only about 2% remains. You come visit, and see all the old growth forests here on the California coast, its natural to say, "wow, there is SO MUCH...."... yet 98% of what was once has been logged.
Funny thing about coast redwood though, it grows VERY fast. I used to call it Redweed.... I planted 8 of them in my back yard in 1988. The largest is now 24" in diameter. But as fast as it grows, it takes many centuries to become "old growth".
    Thanks for your interest.
