I picked up this little Suzuki JR 50 last weekend for my son to start riding. Pretty cool little 2 stroke! I'm planning to clean it up a little, restore the plastics and track down some factory graphics.

Hey all, I am looking to buy a lower end Harley Davidson cruiser. I have never owned a HD myself but do know acquaintances that do/have owned them. I have only been looking at the 1200 Sportster but have been seeing a few other models pop up in the price range on CL. I am not looking to spend much over $3,000 (maybe $3,600 max).

I know that isn't much but does anyone have any advice for me?

I highly doubt that you will find anything other than sportsters in that price range. And I don't know about your area but around here, you can't find 1200's that are in good shape for that price. You'll mostly see older 883's. I have a 1200 and love it. I didn't want the 883 because I read that a lot of people complain about the power so I decided to stay away from 883's but it might not bother you. I paid 4200 for my 96 1200c and it had 26k miles on it, just for reference.

This is correct, also the 883's are geared differently than the 1200 Sportster. I have owned both in the past and would also recommend if you are getting a Sportster hold out for a 1200. If you are wanting a comfortable cruiser I would search for a bigger bike. IMO
    Good luck in your search.

Thanks for the info guys. The reason I ask is because I ran across this, which very well could be fake, while looking for sportsters:
    http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/mcy/4957155258.html

I have also heard the differences of the 883 and 1200 which is why im really looking for a 1200. I have found plenty of 1200 sportsters ranging from 1980-1994 within my price range. Some might be missing a battery cover or something of the sort but that doesn't bother me.

Some interesting thoughts on the 1200 vs 883.
I would not snub the 883 just yet, if you can find one that was taken care of, it's actually a better platform to build on. The 883 has a different head (more material in the right places) and when bored out to 1200 and ported correctly will make more HP than the stock 1200. Also the lower gearing is a bonus when doing hole shots :D
I have a 1990 883 hugger that has been bored, ported, polished and cammed. Definitely a good time.

The odometer actually does say 16,028 on that one.

I agree that timing is not best but this just so happens to be the timing that I have the funding for it. I have been looking at these for a while but could not justify the cost at the moment. I was saving up for a high clearance bumper for my truck but my builder is busy and I will revisit that later in the year. I am not sure if it is just my area but I really don't see too much flexibility in the seasons either. Most people that want to sell only have it listed around the riding season and those that do list out of season are asking for a higher value. At least now I have the most amount of options.

With this being my first HD I am hoping to get something that I don't have to do too much to. I don't mind doing exterior work like paint, exhaust or aesthetic parts but until I know more about these models I am hoping to stay away from larger modifications.

just keep an eye out and be willing to drive a bit. we picked up a '96 1200 with 20k miles for $2,700 that had zero issues. not the best deal but not the worst.
