Hey guys, my 06 RC was in an accident on 12/20/17, total loss, (not at fault, hit in an intersection by someone with a suspended license, I'm fine). Only had it 2 months! purchased in OCT 2017.

    Now dealing with Geico:
The salvage price is $3400 and there is frame damage. Airbag deployed.
    I own the truck outright.
Geico offered $11700 for the truck with 60k miles. quite a bit more than I paid.

Some say dont take the first offer and hold out but they are not moving from that price. Seems really firm.

Not planning to buy it back and rebuild but it did cross my mind.
I cant really get a good repair quote with it at the auction lot already.

Geico wont give me more than $107 for my leer canopy...ugh. So I told the claims adjuster I'm going to pull it off. Is anyone on here looking for a Blue, 2nd gen leer, 6ft bed. Seattle, WA

Never done any of this before. All help/advice is appreciated. keep me from getting ripped off. Thanks

    Happy holidays
    Thanks

Find trucks for sale similar to yours all over Wa/Or/Id to get a solid "average" price. That'll be your bargaining leverage. $11,700 sounds about right for a 5 lug RC though? Sell the canopy, somebody will hop on it eventually. Take check, buy new truck

I guess I'm not sure what the problem is, if they are offering more than what you paid for it. Take the money, and be done with it. If you want to hold out for more, you do have leverage, as they are likely paying a daily fee for the vehicle to be on the lot.

I had a similar situation years ago, and the insurance co. was trying to rip me off with the money they were offering. They would actually send me a check, and I would send it back. It happened 3-4 times over the course of 3-4 months. They finally gave me what I wanted, and I cashed that check.

Glad to hear you are ok bud. Sounds like a good chunk of change to go toward another good used Tacoma. Take everything off of the wrecked truck that you can and sell it!

They are offering you more than you paid for the truck, and provided that is fair market value for a replacement... they aren't ripping you off.

Sounds to me like you are trying to rip them off, not the other way around.

I agree with selling the leer topper on your own if it's still in 100% usable condition. Keep it around for your next truck.

    Thanks for the advice.
The actual truck price seems pretty good. Its nice of them to let me pull the canopy off. I have a bed mat in there that I told them about.
Has anyone successfully repainted a leer shell? I was hearing $300 at maaco maybe?
I have to put the leer on a ford ranger to pick it up, are the bed dimensions the same?
What would you ask for a Leer on Craigslist? like $600-800 going rate?

More like $200. Used caps sellfor pennies on the dollar. There is just not that many people looking for a tacoma cap.

Personally just take the money and forget about the cap, not worth the hassle.

I disagree. At least where I'm located in WA, there are plenty of canopies selling around here for $500+ if they're in good shape. It doesn't hurt to try to sell it if it's not too much of a hassle.

Your time is worth money. I'd take the insurance money and move on. If you know someone that wants the cap, it might be worth 2 hun if they come get it. Otherwise, taking it off and selling it is alot of time and effort for 2 hun.....

^ this. Being a regular cab you won't be able to re-use it unless you get another regular cab which are difficult to find. So then you are stuck trying to sell it, and the amount of people looking for a shell for a regular cab, close to you, is probably far less than people looking for an access or double cab shell (they all have different fits from what I understand). 2 years will go by and it will be in your yard being used as a flower pot

Shh one could buy the same year RC but a 4WD version for what they're offering. I'd break out into a happy dance

I would take the cap off and store in back yard and shop for another truck. Regular cabs in fairly late models are selling for less than they offered you. Saw one in Topeka with 54000, sliding rear window with cruise and a stick shift for 10500 on clist last week.

They’re paying you well over what you paid for it. How could you possibly be ripped off? Take the check and move on.

As far as the shell, I wouldn’t bother unless you really want another RC to replace your old one. The cab profile is specific to the RC, so it won’t look right on any other long bed. The low numbers of RC trucks means you’ll likely be waiting a while to find a buyer and for some that’s not worthwhile for the few hundred bucks you might get.

Ya the shell is going to be the wrong color almost no matter what. Thats going to make it hard to sell. Maybe its not worth it.
There are no decent 4wd reg cabs around my area that I've found.
I just know a blue 4wd reg cab will come up from $11k as soon as I buy another truck.:sadviolin:

I had a great experience with GEICO. A neighbors tree fell on my 2014 DCSB Off Road and totaled it. I thought his home owners insurance would cover it but they (Allstate) said it was an act of God and wouldn't cover it even though part of the tree had already fallen.

I called GEICO and asked them about it. They said I could sue the home owner and would probably win or they would cover it and take care of it. (I had collision and comp on the truck).

I had the same experience as you on the shell; I had a new Snugtop XTR shell. The adjuster said I should take it off and sell it on my own because they wouldn't give me much for it.

I was pleasantly surprised at how much GEICO paid me; basically it didn't cost me anything to upgrade to my new 2017 DCSB Off Road. It was a hassle, but I was very happy with GEICO. And eventually sold the SnugTop for a decent price.

Take the money and try not to sound too excited while you are accepting their offer.
Geico totaled out my last truck (Dakota) and gave me more money than I could have ever sold that truck for. Mine was still drivable and I then bought is back for 1800 only to sell it with a salvaged title for 3200 a few months later after I fixed it up “good enough”. I realize that this was a special case, but it allowed me to be a bit more patient in choosing my replacement vehicle.
It’s not often that we can get more money for our vehicles than they are worth. Take the win and buy something you like even more. That’s what I did.
