Ask any trucker or trucking company. It's simple math and more accurate than what the computer calculates. Miles traveled/fuel consumed= mpg. Much more accurate than what the computer calculates.

In Texas, pump needs to be accurate to 6 cubic inches per 5 gallons (~0.52%) to pass inspection.

Over the long term the 'manual method' error in the amount of fuel used in TX is ~0.5% plus the difference in the fill level of the first tank and the last tank. If the fill level differs by one gallon it would only take about 13 fill-ups of 15 gallons to reach ~0.5% error. Who knows what the Tacomas computer fuel error is?

The speedometer needs to be accurate to 2%. How can the computer be accurate if it doesn't know how fast it is going? If someone calibrates their MPH they will be more accurate than the computer over the long term.

    What other errors are there?

Edit: actually speedo/odo errors can be worse than 2%; but, I can't find a simple answer.

I could care less between the two also, I just know some would be interested in the difference between what the computer comes up with and manual calculations. That little difference is thousands of dollars a year to someone who drives a truck. I don't but know some people have a habit of wanting to know the difference between the two.

if the speedometer is inaccurate, then the trip indicator is inaccurate. Manual calculations use the trip indicator to calculate the mpg.

So, manual can be more accurate long term.

the computer also receives calibrated information, making the computer indication more accurate

    I'm just using logic here.

Not true. Generally odometers are very accurate and speedometers a little optimistic. Though the signal may originate from the same sensor, the resultant information does not depend on each other.

So I picked my new taco up last night and have already put 500 miles on it due to me traveling a far distance to find a good deal. Anyway after burning thru the first 1/4 of gas I took the pic below and was pretty happy with the results given I had accelerated up numerous freeway onramps and the freeway had some shallow inclines. Yes I agree that the engine does have to downshift for almost every incline to keep pace on the freeway but overall not bad at all.

but they originate from the same signal, and the computer processes them based on the same input signal. There seems to be a calibration feature on this new system.

Regardless if that's true or not there is no flow meter on the injection system or fuel pump. The computer calculates load, rpm, throttle position, etc to "estimate" fuel economy. It will never be more accurate than just the simple math of miles traveled divided by fuel consumed.

My '16 reads about 1/2 mpg lower than actual.

My 2016 Tacoma reads within 0.5 miles from what I get when I do the math.

You think the computer doesn't know how much fuel is going into the injectors?
