To the comment about no snow in SoCal... these were up at Lake Hughes a couple years ago. Breaking this trail was a bitch...

Welcome to northern New England, Liberty. You will find that Portland gets a fair amount of cold (34F) rain in the winter, as well as storms that change from rain to sleet to snow and back to rain. This is because Portland is right on the coast. If you go further inland (Rangeley, Carabassett, etc.) you'll see tons and tons of snow and have some great adventures.

One tip: the most dangerous conditions are within a few degrees of 32F when you end-up with dense slush or wet snow on the road. On those days, you will want weight in the bed and tires with lots of sipes. When it's 10F, there's a lot more traction available due to the snow crystals being sharper at that temp.

OP: I run studded Firestone Winterforce tires in the winter. That might be overkill for you on the coast. I would definitely consider some studless winter tires though. Nokian WR is very popular in New England with good reason. Also Blizzaks.

Listen, when you grow up in buffalo
you dont get to excited everytime it snows

this is the only pic i took last winter, cell phone on way to work

As for tires, I bought the goodyear DURATRACs last summer
they where the best all terrain tire i have ever had,
and they are snow rated as well
better than my old BFG ATs
went the whole winter without even getting close to being stuck.

lots of snow pics here in MT, maybe I'll have some new ones after this weekend!

one of my favorites. went out after a freak storm last fall, 18"+ snow in one day then 60F+ the next. made for some fun (and dirty) driving!

and this past spring. another freak storm just dumped over 6" of snow at the end of May. It all melted in a couple of hours and the weather was great.

Im from NY Just outside of Buffalo NY and these are from a storm we got in Oct 2006 . We were without power for a week and a half. There was so much damage to trees and power lines. And this all came in a matter of like 8 hours

I love Krookz' truck. Hey this picture made me curious. If you had to get pulled out by hooking to those clevis hooks, would they hold up or would it bend the bumper?(Sorry for the newb Q)
