Thanks! Just a crappy camera phone picture too. I'm beyond excited she didn't spook at all and let me get close enough to get a decent picture. Saw her in the middle of taking a sample plot in a unit we are replanting and got some further away pics. I finished up my plot and she was still there and let me get close enough to get this pic before walking off.

Have a theory about that, Phez in the Dakotas and Montana have Kevlar feathers. No really they must! I've seen them take 4 or more shots in the air from several people and they get knocked sideways but keep going. They do eventually die so we do everything we can to recover them once they are hit. Having one come back to life in the vest is always interesting, find myself wondering just how many times do you have kill the same bird?

I spent a day along the Missouri this year too, East side and just South of the ND border. It was a lot colder than 30 degrees, this warm up is great although I sweat hard too if it is too warm. I have thought about jumping in the truck and heading back out there I still have 5 days on my second license (SD). Work interferes with life way too much though.

Amen I will second that great job. Those birds don't look like they are shot up bad at all what are you doing head shooting them?! :) I hope you are able to get a dog this spring like planned! Obviously you don't need one LOL but it does help in the cattails and thick stuff, especially recovery. And of course water when it isn't frozen.

Interesting theory, kevlar feathers? Sounds plausible.

Today was a good day, I was knocking them down and they stayed. It was miserable out so maybe they weren't to amped to run:notsure:

I did knock one down as it was quartering away from me and he took off at a run, luckily it was in a cut field. I didn't feel like running after him so I shot him on the run. Got a flight shot and a running rabbit shot:D He had 2 broke legs after it was all said and done.

I shoot 2 3/4" #4 copper coated lead high brass. Since my gun is a '79 I dont want to shoot bigger shot. It does well for me though.

The dog would be nice, although with snow, and the freezing rain and ice covering everything, it made it hard for them to hide to bad. Didn't lose a bird today which I always like.

My buddy had a shit day, he got his safety backwards in his head so he kept missing birds because of it, he even forgot to put a round in the breach once. By the third field we were 300 yrds from the truck and I told him if he didnt start hitting shit, I was going to shoot his limit. He fucked up twice more and I got them for him. The last one he managed to hit, but missed on his second two so I took care of it for him  Basically, I shot all 6, but to boost his moral, he got one of them :D

It was a great day. My magic gloves helped though

As you know what it can look like, this was exactly how it looked, crazy. Obviously not my video, but the amount of birds still looked like this.

Interesting perspective. I always found it funny how there were 2 kinds of hunters, ones who hunt trophy deer for sport and the ones who hunt to put meat on the table. Sport hunters typically brag about killing a "big buck" because of the size of the rack, not the amount of meat that came from it.

I grew up on a farm, so we raised a lot of our own food (cattle, chickens, pigs, large garden, ect) and we hunted and fished almost every chance we had. From a very young age, I was always taught that hunting & fishing were a way to provide food for your table, and not just a sport.

I guess its kinda the same school of though when it comes to fishing. I fly fish, and a lot of fellow fly fishermen look down at the idea of keeping a few trout to eat instead of throwing every one back.

To each their own, I guess.

Hey '79 isn't old! I spent 118 days on station off the coast of Iran during the Iranian hostage situation starting in late '79...

Most of us use #5 (lead), I use 1 1/4 or 1 3/8. 2 of the guys use anti-aircraft rounds with 1.5 or more. I think aiming for the head instead of the body helps more than anything and it is hard to train yourself to do that. From the pics of your birds you do exactly that though, good job.

Great video! Days are fewer like that in SD now that so much farmland has been pulled out of CRP. Still more birds than anyplace I've ever hunted. Especially wild birds, that makes a huge difference. Can't hunt till 10 in SD and seeing how we stay right on the ND border I am thinking next year of getting a ND license too. Jan 10 looks like I will be heading to North East ND to pick up a new pup :D Now I hope we just don't get a blizzard. Although it would have to be pretty bad to stop me from going!

I grew up on a farm too, dairy. Deer hunting in Pa. back then was basically a holiday for all males. I think age and experience has as much to do with it as anything. But not for all people obviously, a lot of variables and different experiences. I was a basic meat hunter for years and loved archery hunting the most. After killing my share of deer I eventually started holding off for bigger bucks and didn't want to shoot one smaller than the last. And eventually my taste changed too, basically just pulled the backstrap and cut out the rest to mix and grind with pork. And I used to love venison. Now I prefer Prime beef.

When the good people of Pa. basically fired Gary Alt due to deer management for trophy bucks he stopped here on his way to Ca. The Blufflands Whitetail Association hired him as a consultant. It is the corner of Wi. Mn. and Iowa, some of the best trophy gene pool in the world. Because of him Mn. now has antler restriction in some counties. Maybe that is the answer- localized areas for trophy bucks. And the rest for the "if it is brown it is down crowd." I cross into Buffalo County Wi. most weekends in the winter on my way to shoot eagles (with the camera of course). When I moved here I saw Gene Wensel's name in the Rochester Archery Club book and finally Gene and Barry's river bottom bucks made sense. But it has been 10 years since I pulled the trigger or hit the release on a bovine. I consider deer season an interruption of bird season now. NEVER would had dreamed that was possible coming from me. It is a hard spot to please both the meat and trophy crowds and I have sat in both camps.

I give 2 big boar coon hides and a muskrat skin for my first fly rod. Back around when Mobby Dick was a minnow LOL. I do practice catch and release more times than not. But keep them when I want some trout to eat. One of the best limestone trout streams in Mn. is close to my house and the DNR is begging people to pull out slot limit trout, they are starting to become limited in size due to the large number of trout. It has more than 400 trout per mile that are 14 inch or larger. Labor Day weekend I keep my limit each year. You can imagine the look of horror on the faces of the other people fishing when they see me.

Not big trout due to the slot limit. But they sure do taste good! Now if I could only find some scrapple around here to go with them....

Nice trout man, wish we had them around here in delaware. We do have scrapple though! You can look up rappa or hughes online, find a number and call them. The delivery anywhere in the country.

    Do you fish in wingtips?

    Interesting.

To bad your not picking up that pup 6 or 7 days earlier. I have 2 more days left to hunt when I get back from my xmas surf trip. If you can swing it, come out early. The hunting is insane and I have tons of spots, although I dont need them. You only need one and you limit out.

I like to go for grouse and partridge as well, if you out, may as well make a day of it.
