    .
Today was a good day for mileage and stats are: ... i.e. ... interstate highway, flat & medium rolling hills & valleys, 300 miles, 87 octane, 70-75 MPH, 70-70F, medium humidity, mileage calculated 3 ways, refueled 4 times in small amounts, only me in truck and no gear, only added weight was full tank of fuel, no bed cover or shell.

Today I took the Tacoma (SR5, AC/LB, V-6, 4x2, Automatic) on a 300 mile day trip and it was flawless with no more "clunks or thuds" in drive shaft area.

It was a dream to drive on the interstate.

Mileage = I averaged 22.2 MPG on Tacoma computer (on interstate w/ small to medium hills & valleys @ 72 MPH w/ 87 oct) ... and it was 22.74 MPGs when calculated manually on "gallons & miles & math" ... and end of the day it was at 24.1 MPG on truck computer.

Having only about 725 miles on truck and when it is broken in later, with synthetic oil and a cool, dry day on a flat road at 55-60 ... I bet I could get 26 MPGs and maybe more.

I calculated my mileage 3 ways today to triple check it and it varied very, very little (maybe .1 MPG in various calculations).

    Love this truck ... :D

There are may threads about the auto transmission shifting issues, fluid levels, etc. and I'm not going to rehash them here. I did add about 3/4 qt to mine to bring it up to the proper level but didn't reset the ECM (to re-learn driving habits) until a few weeks later. Here's what happened to my MPG afterwards. Any thoughts on this one?

Ummm, this was surprising today. V6 AT. Little to no wind, gas purchased in Bend, Oregon, slight elevation loss over the trip. This was Bend to Mecca Flats near Warm Springs Reservation.

This kinda p****s me off...I have had my16 trd or v6 auto access cab for about a month now with almost 2k miles and am getting an average of 14 or 15 mpg. Thats with a daily 16 mile round trip with a top speed of 60 and twice a week 50 mile round trip with the cruise set at 75. WTF, can anyone shed some light on this.

    ... ^^^ ... Do you have a 4x2 or a 4x4 ?

IMO & from my past experiences ... 4x4s get about 3-4 miles lower MPG (my experiences only).

FWIW ... mine is a 4x2 and I get from 17s-low 20s depending (city, highway, hills & speed).

can't complain. my old Dakota was getting 12-13 MPG. but i'm averaging 24mpg to work, 20 home (work near sea level, live in the hills). also between 17-21 with city driving. all averaging out to around 19.5. though it fluctuates depending on if i fill up at home or near work. also sometimes driving for work sends me a couple hundred miles out through LA traffic or 4x4ing into the mountains around us.

I noticed the rig change a bit (engine settle in?) at about 3000 mi. I currently am getting 18 city/23 hwy. before 3000 mi = 14 city/18 hwy. same trip every week.
one thing I did notice that helped was using 91 gas. smoother shifting, didn't feel like a cheap 4 cyl truck anymore. I have a 2016 sport 4x4 DCLB. Seems as though the engine "learning" my driving habits finally kicked in. Also, I have removed the air dam.

    ... ^^^ ... Did you try ... 87 ... 89 ... & ... 91 octane fuel grades ... experiences ?? .... Thanks.

I have thought about increasing the octane (from 87 to 91) ... and mostly used 91 that in the past in other vehicles.

    Yes.
87 was when it felt like a 4 cyl. I have a tow package and could not imagine towing a float tube at that point. I was super bummed.
changed to 91 at about 2000 miles and noticed a difference in mpg right away.
stayed with 91 through 3000 miles and it's been smooth sailing as far as the "feel" of the truck.
Also, I was having the dreaded "vibration/sluggish" gear shifting within 1800-2300 rpm's (it felt like I was damaging something during normal driving)...that seems to be much less (I don't even notice it now) of an issue. The truck appears to flow through those rpms pretty close to seamless now. I believe also that I am settling in to the truck now. It could be an even combination of the two that is making for a happy Tacoma owner now.

My mechanic has a 2014 4r and recommended after my 5000 mi service, to remove (need to cut with a razor blade) the air filter padding to gain better air flow into the system. Sure enough, he had his still in the shop to show customers as needed. Maybe look into this as well. I'll be doing this when I hit the shop at 5000 mi.
