I have been posting pics everyday this week to and from work to show that the V6 is capable of getting the advertised mpg.

Below are pics of when I pulled into the gas station to fill up on the way home, the pics prove that the mpg gauge on the dash is pretty accurate and they prove that the truck got 21 mpg for that tank of gas. 367.6 miles divided by 17.5 gallons comes to 21. The pumped stopped right at 17 gals but I trickled another half gallon into the tank.

Here`s the pic just before fill up.

    Mpg 5-26-16.jpg

Pic of pump after fill up.

    Fillup.jpg

I had 3 1/2 gals left which means I could have went roughly another 60 to 65 miles which would have gave me a little over 425 miles on a tank of gas.

I never let my tank get this low but I wanted to do it for this thread.

I can`t speak for everyone`s 3rd Gen but mine gets the Mpg that Toyota says it`s supposed to get.

I don't doubt that it can get the numbers, but it has to be ideal conditions. You're moving along pretty steadily at 50-65 mph, and driving a 2wd access cab. I haven't had a tank yet where I'm on rural highways and can try to see what mine will do. Hopefully, it will look like yours. I believe that it will.

If your like me it's mostly hwy around 75mph my 4x4 or dcsb around 18mpg and my SR 4cyl gets around 17mpg but loaded . I have gotten better if I keep it under 60 on both with AC off but you don't do it often or you'll get you ass run over. Lol

Anyone can go back and look at my previously posted pics and they can see that the cruise was set at 71 to 72 when on the interstate, my trip to work consist of 7 miles interstate and 12 miles stop and go at several red lights and stop signs through town, depending on which way I go one way has 2 red lights less and is a little longer, but either way that I go to and from work I can get the mpg that I am getting.

AC vs DC is basically the same size truck, AC has a longer bed and shorter cab while the DC has a longer cab but a shorter bed. I agree that there are factors like 2wd vs 4x4 and bigger tires etc that effect the mpg which why I stated that I can`t speak for everyone`s 3rd Gen but mine does what it`s supposed to do.

Driving habits is a key factor when driving any car/truck and I have had my 3rd Gen long enough to see that if I stomp on it from red light/stop sign to red light/stop sign my mpg is not as good.

I hope that your mpg numbers get better for you as time goes by.

Just filled up 10 minutes ago. .1mpg worse than the last tank. I've meticulously documented everything in Fuelly. I'm mid-40s and pretty easy on the gas, but I fear that a trend line has been established. I have 2 choices on my daily commute. Stop n go, or 80mph Toll Road. Sorta stuck between a rock and a hard place. Need a rural road trip to see if I can get anywhere close to your #'s.

Really depends on how you drive truck and conditions: wind direction and velocity, hills, stop and go, etc. Mostly though it's how you drive it. Mine is starting to level out at 12,500 miles, 70% hiway 30%hills at home.

I have the same truck manual off-road double cab. Was it the shell that made the mpg drop? I have been hitting around 18.5 to 19. I have learned that with the manual, high speeds will drop mpg quicker than stop go. I can control the mpg easier with the gear changes in the city. I do about fifty fifty.

    tonneau,
Went on a drive yesterday, saw 22.8mpg on this tank. I was impressed and I wasn't babying it either.

I'm at 17 ish right now as well (rounded up call it 18). I drive it how I like, I don't baby it. I like to throw the ECT button and sometimes stick it in S5 and drive around. All stock TRD OR package and tires inflated by an additional 3-4 psi.

Most of my driving consists of 50% interstate driving (70-80 mph) then 50% around town "stop and go" driving. Seems like the truck is just stuck at 17 mpg right now...

If you live or commute places where you can drive long un-interrupted distances on 45-55 mph roads I can see where you'd definitely get good mpg results. But for me... I'm not seeing it.

    A/C
I was curious about the camper's effect on mileage. Before I bought it I asked lots of questions on here and very few felt like camper shell had affected fuel economy negatively. I wonder about the mud flaps as well.

Actually, I may be on to something. We've had a nice cool snap since I filled up last, and I'm still at 18-19. I'm beginning to think that it may be the A/C that is the difference. I'm honestly not too concerned with it. Will continue to track it closely and see. Have you been running your A/C much? Here in Texas it's probably on 90% of the time.

I have not been running the A/C that much maybe three times... I tend to go with the two front windows and rear middle open on my way home and run open vents in the morning. I do change my route up on the way home. I take a longer way in the morning (hwy) and take a shorter way back home (back roads). It all depends on time of day or day. I just like to be ahead of the crowd and not be rushed.

As for mods I really do not have any just stock truck no flaps only came with oil cooler because I can buy the other things for less..

I have had mudflaps on mine since the first month I bought mine and my mpg is exactly what Toyota advertises it at.

As for the air condition effecting mpg, it has not effected mine, the posts that I made this week showing 21 mpg at fillup was with the A/C running everyday.

3rd gen doesn't defy physics. A/C consumes energy.
