Mine has the blower and is tuned to where I can get 18-22 if I am being smart. I like to go long, long distance in the backcountry with a solar powered camper on back so I don't see the point at going through automotive puberty over again. Might be time to grow up.

I had to remind myself that we're in the 3rd gen section. My 1st gen w/ ECT on does well in the city, sometimes will post better mpgs.

Already accounted for. (But even if I didn't the numbers would be higher: multiply by 1.0366 or 680/656.)

There is only 130 miles on his truck, as the engine "breaks in" the mileage should improve...

Let's get this thread on course again. Anyone calculating their own mileage or just trusting the computer?

I saw from a Facebook post that when you shut off your engine. A trip summary of miles you went and MPG from your last drive pops up. Pretty cool.

I sent in a request for them to enable the 2016 Tacomas as an option on Fuelly.com so we can hopefully start getting some real world data.

You should trust the computer. It's metering of the fuel is more accurate than the gas pump at the station

That's totally false. Maybe for a couple of tanks but, for calculating your average over several/many fill ups, doing it old school is more accurate. If, after doing that you find that the two methods agree you are probably OK to use solely the computer values. I've never had a vehicle where the two were equal.

First fill up at 386 miles. Low fuel light came on. Truck said 19.9 mpg. Calculated by hand was 20.5 mpg. Not too far off. I'm just happy to get almost 400 miles per tank. It's been a long time coming! Mixed driving, mostly highway. For 100 of those miles I had a full sized fridge and the rest loaded up with other households.

No two pumps will measure your tank the same way. It will change every time.

And after 20 or 30 fill ups that will average out.

Then we should consider 20 or 30 tanks of what the computer says vs 20 or 30 tanks of what the pump says. Then we can have a close average of how much the computer and actual results vary.

I agree that it is rare when the computer mpg and hand calculation match. imo the error is in the hand calculation. Not in the math, that is simple. It comes due to the fact that you can vary a few tenths of a gallon each time you fill up. Depending how fast the pump is pumping gas, fuel handle sensitivity to click off, etc.

I tend to agree more with the computers than hand calculations from tank to tank mpg.

I don't want to get into a long diatribe about this but for a true average you need to it by hand and you need many fill ups. The variances in fill up amounts, pump variations, etc... all become insignificant once you have enough fill ups. The often fixed deviation from real on the computer never goes away.

At 79 fill ups on my motorcycle since this time last year (18k miles) and I am right at 50.0mpg average by hand calculation. The computer (resets at each fill up) is always ~4mpg lower average than what I get after hand calculating each fill up. This is a permanet ~8% offset. The same thing to some degree is my experience with every auto or moto I've owned with a fuel computer.

It would be nice if you could calibrate the computer yourself.

I'm a mathematician. Your hand calculations aren't completed wrong. Your inputs are incorrect.

    Just do both people.

And give details on the truck for comparison.

As far as I know, the computer systems use a basic computing formula based on a couple pieces of info. Gas consumption is calculated by a float in the gas tanks which is wrongfully calibrated to gauge less is in the tank than is to protect against liability from the automaker and error on the side of caution. It is not a magical system that perfectly detects every mole of gas combusted by the engine.

Do both and see how the numbers compare.

No one is going to be able to do this under perfect lab conditions, and good thing they don't have to be.
