Z50king, sir, I think that we can all agree with you that most people can accurately divide gallons into miles.

But I fundamentally disagree that the ECU calculated mileage is inherently more accurate than manually recording accumulated miles and gas required top off the tank.

With the manual method, the odometer reading is a possible source of error, but that is true for the ECU method as well, so we can ignore it as a difference between methods. Every pump with an automatic fill option cuts off the flow at a somewhat different level of fill. But this error will disappear entirely in subsequent fill-ups, as long as the fill-ups are done consecutively. The third source of error is the accuracy of the gas pump itself, but these pumps must be calibrated to government mandated standards. We are obliged to live with this, and at the risk of monetary penalties to the gas companies, I trust the accuracy of the pumps.

The vehicle's ECU, on the other hand, while using the same odometer reading (no difference in error from the manual method), is constantly CALCULATING fuel usage from the frequency and duration of fuel injector pulses. The fuel consumed is inferred, not measured. And this method of calculating fuel consumption is dependent upon the fuel injectors being accurate (no federal or state standards), and the accuracy of the injectors remaining unchanged over time (a rash assumption, given the tendency to foul and restrict flow as time passes). Now, all modern vehicles also have a Fuel/Air Ratio sensor which gives feedback to the ECU, and the injector frequency and duration of fueling will be altered to maintain the desired AFR, so the vehicle runs well, but MPG calculation is not compensated for this.

For these reasons, I believe that manual measuring and calculation is the better method, especially over time.

    Frank

Also, there must be some sampling rate for the computer to gather info and put that into the averaging scheme. Depending on the frequency of this sampling rate many transient states of consumption will be missed.

Whoa! Hell no! They do NOT base fuel mileage on the gas gauge!

    Edit:

Just saw this is for 3rd Gen's. Enjoy anyway.

    2012 DCSB 4x4, stock everything.

I got 16.8 mpg on the last tank. Yellow light to yellow light. All highway miles.

Pretty shitty if you ask me, but there is probably about ~4k ft of elevation change (up and down) from my house to work.

If I get 24+ MPG on the 2016 Limited, I will be extremely happy. Right now, with the truck I am driving... I have to drive it like an old lady on the highway to squeeze out 18mpg. I probably avg 16. Going to 24 would improve it by 50% for me.

I'm going to put up a review tomorrow on the truck with a few pics. I did drive conservative. As well as having ect turned off. But to your point. This is the reason why I bought the 2016 over the 15. Even getting a discounted 15 I would make up the gas difference if I kept the truck more than 4 years with the mileage I drive.

So, if you could add a supercharger...oh, you can't... I got 10 mpg once on a boosted 100 mph jaunt. I felt good about it.

Why would I even want to add a supercharger? The truck takes me to do funner stuff than going 100mph on the freeway.

Hi Everyone, Just joined the group.
Got the 2016 4x4 Tacoma. Have had it for about 1 month.
I have been getting ~15mpg. I have been light on the truck. I am wondering if there is too high for that truck. Have anyone see it this high?
There is now about 3000 km on the truck now.

Right. If I drive 60-65 for 35 miles (my commute to work) and keep the RPM's constantly under 2000, I am able to squeeze 21-23 MPG's. Driving that slow on LA freeways is funny because even in the right lane's people are riding my ass and passing me pissed off. If I do 75-80 (the way I usually drive), I get 18-19 MPG's. This truck is making me change my driving habits to get the MPG's I want though. On the city streets, I get 13-16 MPG's if I'm lucky. All these red lights and accelerating from dead stops really drains my tank.

I wonder where and how these EPA numbers are measured? Is it in a lab? Like in a controlled environment? 19 city seems unrealistic. 24 hwy seems obtainable maybe. I had a 2014 Accord Sport 4 banger that said 26 city and 35 Hwy. It was a mission to crack 30 mpg on the highway in that thing. City, I would be lucky to get 21-22 mpg's.
