Rooster, it'll be interesting here in April when I migrate down your way (Dana Point) for a month and run the local COSTCO gas to see if that mpg sticks? I'm hoping someone here can give us some input on the different gas blends by region, i.e., PNW verses SoCal as well as that winter verses summer blend we get up here?

19 MPG the way I drive. Doesn't matter if city or highway. Good enough at today's gas prices. My Saab 9-5 Aero got around 18 city and 28 highway...driving it the way a Saab should be driven. My 95' Subaru Legacy wagon gets 20 MPG with gas pedal pressed to the floor at all times. Until those squeaky little mini cars get 100+ MPG they are at a disadvantage as far as I'm concerned. :)

Oh, forgot to mention most of my driving is between 7000-10,000 feet altitude.

23's about the max I've gotten daily driving. Had a long trip or two but didn't think to monitor it like a doofus.

My 2016 gets 14.7 minimum. That's in winter with long warm ups, short trips and low gear driving on slippery roads plus sitting in it with the engine running the engine with the heater on waiting for my wife at the train.

My Tacoma TRD is stock with six speed manual. My best mpg was 22.2. I guess I average 18.1 or so. Lots of mixed local and higway driving. In fact I watch the mpg economy meter on the dash go and stay at 30 mpg for long periods when I watch that I seem to drive more economically but it's annoying so I just drive conservatively and reap the results.

If I wanted an economy car I'd have bought a Prius. But I'll tell you a $36,000 prius is so overpriced you could buy a cheap stripped little four cylinder for half that and keep the other half =$18,000 for the difference in gas mileage! That's a lot of gas!

I've kept my 2016 double cab 3.5 liter v6, six speed manual 4x4 completely stock. I get as low as 14.7 mpg up to 22.2 mpg and average 18.1 mpg. I drive conservative but not slow. Mostly 10 over the limit.

I originally wanted to install a real low restriction cold air filter unit plus a cat back exhaust both for power and fuel mikes savings. But then I saw too many quality engineering reports that said neither alone would benefit enough to warrant the cost unless I added tuned headers. Even then the most efficient use of that set up is only at high rpm or the track. I've never shifted over 4600 rpm and that only once. So it would be a waste.

I suggest anyone who wants to modify your Tacoma go online and check the cold air and cat back exhaust videos. You'd be surprised at the results. Sound cool? You bet but I like quiet. ( I'm old and tired of the noise. I never liked the sound of a v6 anyway. Big V8- oh yeah! My Harley Davisvision definitely- 40 inch drag pipes and other performance mods. It's deafening. And fast!

    First time on this thread

If I was going to modify my Tacoma I'd go all the way. Parts I mentioned above plus supercharger with URD smaller pulley. Third stage clutch. Beefed up transmission.

The manuals have a 4:33 rear. The automatics have a 3. Something. Different out of the box

The manuals are faster 0-60. The automatic faster in the 1/4 mile stock

BTW. The 2016 Tacoma comes stock with cold air filtering. I'm sticking with the OEM paper filter. It's reported the k& n type actually cut down power at normal operating rpm. Plus paper filters better. Dannyblues

Wow you get 23 mpg on a v6 3.5 liter Tacoma??? Must be an automatic and must have been built on a Wednesday! My best is 22.2. Happened only once. I average 18.1 mixed driving highway and local. Lots of steep hills here in northwestern Connecticut. Dannyblues
That's pretty bad mpg. In fact the worst I've heard. My worst in winter in 4 WD at times with lots of idling is 14.7. At 11,300 miles I average 18.1 and mines the TRD sport 4x4 double cab with six speed manual. Dannyblues

Did you modify yours at all? What tires and wheels? No joke but do you have your tires inflated properly. I've been told to ignore the tire decal specs of 29 psi and keep the OEM 265/65-17 Firestone destination LE tires at 32 psi cold.

I don't want to sound insulting but check the tire pressure. Or it has to be your driving habits that get that low mpg. Dannyblues

Pretty good mpg overall. Automatic? My double cab TRD is a manual. I've gotten 22.2 mpg once. I average 18.1 mpg. Here in northwest Connecticut it's very hllly. Mixed highway and local driving. I'm usually 10 over the posted speed limit but drive conservative.

With 11.8-1 compression the 3.5 should burn premium fuel very efficiently though it's tuned to burn 87 regular. ( or higher as stated in the owners manual )

I use fuel from only "TIER 3" gas providers ( that can be identified with an online google ). So far I tried a tank of regular once but nearly every other fuel up has been with Shell 93 nitro. At 3.09 a gallon it isn't cheap vs as low as $2.19 at BJ's. I get 1 mpg more with the premium which doesn't offset the price difference but I googled an independent lab test of the tier 3 shell 93 nitro premium fuel and found it is the ONLY fuel that actually continual keeps your injectors and other components absolutely brand new clean when used regularly. Even one full tank of it now and then is supposed to remove 65% of the built up crud in your injectors and engine. Can't argue with science

My 2016 Tacoma cost more than my first house in Long Island so I'm taking the best care of it I can. First new vehicle I've bought in 15 years and at 67 years of age maybe my last ( although I plan to trade it in at three years for a new 2020 if they still offer the manual tranny)

That's just my take. Many may disagree but an 11.8 to 1 compression engine should benefit from the premium and the proven shell fuel keeps it working like new. I've enquired about retuning the engine to burn premium and it's possible maybe to get up to 331 hp from my stock 268 hp v6 at least in theory. But nobody knows. I don't want any intake or exhaust mods on this one. Dannyblues

That's not a v6 Tacoma or even a four banger. Someone owns a Prius! Dannyblues

Here to in northwestern Connecticut it's hilly and definitely effects the mpg negatively

Check out "Tier 3 " fuel providers. They all meet minimum far above average detergents in their fuels. Google it. Shell premium 93 nitro is in a class all by itself. I use it most of the time in my 2016 TRD sport double cab with six speed manual. Best 22.2 mpg. Worst 14.7 mpg. Average 18.7 mpg in hilly northwestern Connecticut. Truck has over 11,300 on it now. With four synthetic 0-20 Toyota oil changes ( one without filter- all no charge except the one I personally did at 2500 miles as oil only change ) Dannyblues

I see anywhere between 18 to 20.5 typically. I like to drive with ECT on more, and that will definitely knock it down to 18-18.5, otherwise 19 isn't uncommon. 15,500 miles.

Well, as one fellow pointed out some times earlier, the mpg (or L/100km in Canada) indicated on the instrument cluster is less accurate than the measurement taken with mileage done and fuel added in the tank. I've checked it out with 3 different vehicles I owned.

Also, a broken in vehicle will definately use less gas than a brand new one. On Acura TL, fuel consumption would markedly drop after 30,000 km. My previous 2012 Tacoma access cab, 4x4, 2.7L with over 50,000km done, would use around 9.2L/100km on the highway and 12.2L/100km in town during summertime. Winter up here considerably increases fuel consumption. My actual 2016 Tacoma, same specs, uses 10-11L highway and 12-13L in town. It has only 7,400km on the clock.
