I was hoping you'd say 1k and I'd would've said to run to a Giant dealer and grab a Revolt. Ok, here's my thoughts. For 3-500, you're going to either get something A) Not so great, or B) Better, but still in the 7-10 year old range. There's nothing wrong w/ the latter, but I really wanted to recommend you hop on a modern "Gravel bike". It's essentially a road bike that has modern geometry (slacker than a road bike for stability and slightly more upright) and also fits a wider tire. It's cool b/c you can run a wider tire which accomplishes a few things. It's more comfortable (more air volume), it's more confidence inspiring compared to a standard road bike tire, and you can run knobby tires which lets you explore unpaved roads and even mild mountain bike stuff once you're ready for it.

I did a very quick search on FB marketplace in Dallas and didn't find what I would want to recommend. I did find an older Cyclocross bike in philly that wouldn't be too bad for 500. Cycloscross bikes are like the OG of gravel bikes but with a more aggressive geometry to go faster. ANyway, Let me keep poking around and see what I can come up with.

Rick, that thing is from the '90s. As much as you post pics that you're using your bike, do yourself a huge favor and divert a few truck mod dollars and get yourself a new bike. That thing must weigh a ton with that fork on it.

I was thinking similar to you but from the other direction. He said when he loses weight he wants to do more trails. I was thinking 29er with road tires.

I'm with Chris. If you can get your budget up to $1k you'll be much better off. If you get out of the hobby it's not a ton of money sitting there, and if you advance in the hobby you'll have a base that would be worthy of some upgrades if you get to that point.

no this is great, this helps set expectations.. im extremely new to this so i was spitballing numbers - if you guys recommend 1k i can definitely open up my budget and make it work. I did have a quick look and saw this one

    23F13CAD-AFD0-4AE1-8BBB-923DAE99291E.jpg

this is the cheapest Revolt I coukd find on that dealer’s site. I didnt know road bikes can be customized and modified to be used on gravel and trails.. thats great info and helps open up my budget because I was thinking I had to buy 2 bikes to accomplish what I wanted.

Then get him a new bike:D. If he's going to be on it a while longer and if you know how to work on them, just getting a new front wheel for disc brakes and an Avid BB7 mechanical caliper would really help slowing that tank down. Get a 180mm rotor. I might have a spare I could throw in your uca box, I'll go look.

I would have to replace the fork as there is no place to attach disc brakes

@Unchained 5150 I have a set of brake levers that should work for your sons bike.

The advanced is a carbon frame. The $1k version is aluminum. I have the bike that you pictured and am happy with it. I pretty much use it only for roads - paved and dirt. I have a mountain bike as well, so I don't have a reason to take it on trails, but I have tried it a couple of times just to see how it does.

The owner of the shop where I got mine rides a Revolt. He says he has a few different wheel sets, but uses for a wide variety of terrain, from triathlons to single track mountain bike trails.

No you wouldn’t , I can clearly see mounts in the pic. They’re just tab mounts, not post. But you’d be doing him a favor replacing that fork anyway.

Beyond that, no spare 180 rotor in my tool box, but I do have a set of Avid Speed Dial levers that work for v-brakes or mechanical disc if you go that route. I could just put them in your uca box, you'll just have to wait for the TW express to show up. Might be a couple weeks still if you're in a rush. Amazon has plenty that you could have in a day or two.

IMG_1187 (1).jpg Btw, I think I'm going to put up my road bike for sale. I'm thinning the herd. So here it is...unless I change my mind lol. Cannondale CAAD9. Last of the hand-made in the USA frames. size is 56. ENVE carbon fork. (I'll include the original fork too) Putting new bar tape on it. Otherwise, Sram Red mechanical. SRAM ceramic bottom bracket. Williams hybrid-ceramic hubs/carbon rims. I'll sell w/ the pedals. It'll really only need some new brake pads pretty soon and the chainrings up front could use some replacing. I'll also provide plenty of pics and more in depth description to anyone who is seriously interested. It's super light. I can put it on the scale at some point too. 1k will do it.

Nice ride. That's a good deal for someone. I've been considering selling my Madone and moving to a Domane.

Thanks. It's really just to make room for other projects.... Bike and truck related. I haven't posted it anywhere else yet. Figured I'd offer it up here first.

Tough call. The madone is a nice bike....Have you ridden the domane yet?

Rode my friends' a little. I forget the exact model. Trek is a pain with all the versions. He's offered to let me take it for a week or so to really demo but I don't need to. My Madone is older, Trek has made the current Madone into something way too aggressive for my old back, mine is more like the current Emonde. I am no longer a slammed stem guy. His is full ultegra, dick brakes and Di2. i'd do the same but mechanical.
