Sorry to hear! What engine? Being a double cab guessing the V6? Truck looks great.

Yes, the TRD O/R was never offered to my knowledge with a 4 cylinder option. Yes, the gas guzzling 4.0 ;). Up until then I would have said it was my most reliable vehicle ever. Now that honor falls to my 2005 Jeep Rubicon. I have owned both since new and since 2005 (both are 2006 models) and the blown up engine due to a head gasket makes the Jeep the easy winner.

My Rubicon, 135,000 miles. No problems. It does leak a little oil but it does not burn any and goes a full 5,000 miles between oil changes without any additional despite the valve cover leak. Toyota might need to take a few lessons from Jeep for reliability.

Hopefully your replacement V6 will be typical, meaning good for at least 200k miles without major trouble. I did read though, that if any Tacoma (and 4-Runner) engine was prone to head gasket trouble it was the 2005-2006 V6. Nice looking Jeep. Not sure if that year was a Chrysler product.

I read somewhere, unconfirmed, that my new engine was outside the serial range of problem engines. Maybe, maybe not. It took me 18 years to get where I am with it, in another 18 I may not care. Maybe it was the dealer down in Miami that did the work who told me so. If the engine had blown on home ground I would have done differently but when 2,000 miles from home, I just told the tow truck to haul it to the nearest Toyota dealer. At least he rescued me from a freeway full of maniacs.

The 2006 Jeep Wrangler is the TJ model series, the last of the AMC designed Jeeps with the straight six Rambler lineage engine. The engine was not the same but very closely resembled the engine in my father's Rambler 550 Classic. It easily ran over 400,000 miles leaking oil all the way. Yes, the TJ series was produced under Chrysler management. The following JK and now the JL series are all Chrysler with the sXXXXty 3.8 oil burning clunker minivan V6 and now I guess some kinda "Penta Star" V6 POC.

Mine has 1/4 thick 6061 aluminum tub armor and boat sides with 4130 steel runners by Savvy OR. The inside of the tub is reinforced with aluminum bar stock also from Savvy. The suspension and steering are all Currie Rock Jock with Johnny Joints, full front and rear air lockers and the rear diff is an amazing (if not slightly non-bullet proof) geared LSD. And Black Magic oversize front brake kit, Terraflex front twin bar anti-sway system with disconnect and a bunch of other expensive parts and custom drive shafts.

    Jeep Rubicon (TJ) rear diff:

So you have a 'real' Jeep! If I recall correctly, it's a 4.0L straight 6. Up until about college age for me, AMCs were still somewhat common. My parents (unfortunately) had a Gremlin with the 232 cid straight 6. Along with a Ford Aerostar I owned, the worst vehicles I ever drove in snow. Unlike their AWD Eagle wagon, wish I owned one. I friend's family that had a Hornet, another a Pacer and I had 1980 Concord for a company vehicle with the 258 cid 6. Interesting photo of the differential.

If I didn't have the Tacoma, I could see getting a Jeep, something I wouldn't mind throwing firewood into. Just got my '07 Tacoma back from the shop, 153k+ miles (to keep with the topic). A bunch of routine wear items done except for the drive shaft U joint that needed replacement. Tires, brakes, exhaust system - so big big bucks but that's what happens when you buy a vehicle (last year) that's 15 years old. Should be good for a while. Chances are your replacement engine will be good for a long time, as I heard certainly not all 2005-6 V6s were prone to failure.

The Toyota dealer replaced the U joints on my drive shaft under some SB(?) and few years ago and I replaced the center bearing. Next time it gets a custom possibly single piece drive shaft. I also had to replace the rear leaf springs multiple times under a SB. I finally did a lift, Toytec Bilstien kit up front set at 2 inches lift and a custom rear spring pack made for my truck for 1.5 inches lift in the rear, overload springs for towing and leveled the truck side to side. Superior Spring in Wichita, KS.
