    Hello,

The past 3 weeks my 2019 Tacoma (20K miles) has been having issues where when accelerating the engine hesitates and RPMs drop significantly close to stalling before going back up again. This all happens intermittently and turning the engine off and on again fixes the issue. It has gotten to the point where the engine actually stalled while driving.

I took it in to the dealer and waiting on diagnostics, the service advisor mentioned that the fuel pump they installed for the recall shouldn't be failing.

if you got some dirty gas and it clogged a fuel filter, could mimic failing pump (and possibly make pump fail in future).

I thought it was bad gas as well but we've been filling it in the same gas station we fill all our other vehicles with no issues.

it can be a matter of WHEN you fill up. if a station delivery truck just pulled away, any sediment in the tank was stirred up.
i am sure there are filters before it gets to the hose you are using but are they effective 100% of time. just a thought.
if i see a tanker at a gas station, i stay away...but can't know if one just pulled out before i got there.
ps. dealer will likely check filter so you'll know soon.

Dealer told me they are still trying to reproduce the issue but they have codes for vehicle stall and rough idle and the gas tested fine. They don’t have codes for fuel pump so they don’t know what is causing it.

Update: They replaced the low pressure fuel pump in the tank but after filling it up we got some EVAP codes P0441 and P0455. Confirmed that the fuel cap was tight and brought it back in to them which they then proceeded to blame the fuel cap and not the fact they had just worked on the fuel tank.

you may need a new cap. is the rubber seal perfect? could also be a hose associated with fuel and evap system.
if you were not getting those codes previously, i'd check hoses first in case they screwed something up working on it.
definitely take a look at cap seal since it is so easy.

if they say it is cap, have them try another cap from a truck on lot or maybe they have one in parts. takes no effort on their part to prove it to you.
ask them if they are gamblers. if cap, you'll buy one on the spot (or is it a warranty item?). if not, you'll leave truck for them to fix.

They told us there was nothing wrong with the cap and that we have to make sure it clicks 3 times. We only received these codes the day after we took the truck home. They refuse to acknowledge that what they did to replace the fuel pump could cause the issue. They only told us that they ran a "health check" and there was no issue. They reset the codes and asked us to pick up the truck.

EDIT: We are out of the factory 3yr/36K mile warranty and now under the powertrain warranty. The fuel pump was replaced under warranty. They want to charge us for the fuel cap.

I feel this is related to my dealing with them earlier in the day after the service advisor called me to say they were offering to buy my truck for $10K under KBB.
