Took my 05 sport to price powder coating the wheels. The owner said he's seen the problem before with the TRD sport wheels flaking and pitting, and that powder coating would be a waste of money. Apparently after heating the wheels the flaking and pitting part Of the wheel will begin to pimple in a short amount of time. He was honest enough, and said he would do it if I really wanted it done, but knows I would be disappointed with the outcome.. Any one have similar issues? What are my alternatives? The wheels aren't horrible, but a few more Pittsburgh winters and there going to be.. Any input fellas?

Go to a different powder coater. The powder coater you went to doesn't want or know how to prep the wheel properly.

I've had multiple sets of Subaru wheels powdercoated in the past and they came out great, never any problems.

Sport wheels look terrible anyway. No amount of special coatings will help.

what are the wheels made of? Sounds like he is talking about outgassing, usually seen in magnesium and poor quality aluminum.

I've only looked into powder coating.. Just got off the phone with another shop, quoted me $240 for all 4 wheels. And guaranteed no problems with the pitting or flaking.

if the wheels are blasted and or etched in some fashion prior to powder coating, there shouldn't be a problem

the shop i use has this on there site.
Metals such as Cast Iron, Zinc Coatings and Cast Aluminum contain trapped gases. When these metals are heated to cure the powder, gases can be discharged causing bubbles and pits in the powder. Every effort is made to control this by preheating and using powders designed for these types of materials but sometimes it cannot be controlled 100%.

You should be able to get them done. If they do them and it looks like crap then don't pay for it. If you are looking into hydrographics (hydrodipping) or water transfer printing, let me know I own a shop.

Honestly I like the powder coating look and the shop I just talked to seemed confident in having no problems doing it. They have pictures of other tacoma short wheels that theyve recenty done. I'm probably gonna go with them. $240 seems like a reasonable price.
