Hello. I recently purchased a 2001 Tacoma. New to the forum as of today, but I've been searching for a few days trying to find a solution to my power mirror problem.
When the L/R switch is in the center/off position the passenger mirror will still function (partially).
When the switch is in the left position, the driver mirror will go down. It will not go in, out, or up. The passenger mirror will also go down.
When the switch is in the right position, the passenger mirror will go out and down. Nothing else. I swapped out the control switch with an aftermarket one from China and the only change is that the driver mirror will now move in and out, but still not up.
Any ideas? I have searched and searched without finding any solution. I have ordered a replacement oem switch to see if there will be any change but it will not be here until next week.
    Thanks in advance.

Check for good ground and check wiring diagram for correct wiring. Has a mirror been changed recently?

The mirrors are original as far as I know. They are oem. I do have power windows. I can't view the document on my phone but I will check it out when I get home.

Finally got a chance to look at that diagram. Thanks. Hopefully I can figure out the problem tomorrow.

IMG_8461.jpg So I figured out that there is a short somewhere. The circuit board in the switch is fried. Seems to be happening with the up function. Not sure where the short is though. Trying to find it now. Does that explain power to the right mirror when the selector is in neutral?

Also just noticed that the passenger mirror is aftermarket.

Pull the little triangle piece of plastic off of inside of door to access mirror nuts. Unbolt each mirror and check for a pinched wire were the mirror mounts to the door.

That's exactly what I just found. You sir are fantastic. Thank you! I should be safe with just replacing the wires, right? With the proper connectors and not just electrical tape.

Yup ran into that issue when I put power doors into my truck. I didn't use the factory harness hold downs on the passenger mirror, I tightened the mirror too much, and the red wire shorted to the door frame. It burned out my switch like yours.

I don't think you have to replace the wires unless they're cut in half or the wire stands are damaged. My damage was minimal, all I did was tape the affected wires, re-attached the cable to the door, and replaced the switch.

I wouldn't try looking in the junkyard for a new mirror switch unless your junkyard has a lot of relatively new Toyota vehicles (2005+). My friend and I searched through almost every single modern Toyota vehicle they had (almost 100+) and could not find the right one. I ended up finding one from a Toyota Sienna minivan. P&P charges about the same as eBay. It's part #183574, here's one for $10 dollars.

I found a new switch on eBay. Should be here Monday. The wires were basically pinched and molded together. So I'm going to cut out the bad section and use some connectors to put them back together. Thanks for the info.

Crimp connectors? Just because it's vehicle and they vibrate a lot I usually like to solder but crimps will work. Saves room too.

I prefer solder too but this is only temp. I plan on locating some oem mirrors. The glass in these shake a lot. I've read about this being a common problem with aftermarket mirrors.

I have the same problem in my driver's side aftermarket mirror. The mirror is tightened too much. I loosened it and it didn't rattle anymore.

If you want to be thorough I was told it should be torqued to 25 N*m (18 ft-lbs).

Do you know where to get the glass with the backing on it? The black piece that mounts the glass?
