During winter, I plugged in my iron to wax my snowboard from the back of my truck. But it only works when I turn the engine on. If I just put the ignition in accessory, it turns off within seconds. Is there something wrong with my power outlet? Or am I doing something wrong?

    Thanks in advance!

It's like that on purpose to prevent you from draining your battery.

What’s wrong with leaving the truck on just to wax your board?

The problem is that your iron is too high of wattage. 400 watt max on the bed outlet, your iron (according to google) ranges from 800-2000 depending on what model you have.

When you max out the wattage you trip the "breaker" and it turns off.

You'll get 400 watts with the engine idling and 100 watts while driving. Plugging in a 110v device without the engine running would tank your battery very quickly if the outlet was hot all the time.

You're plugging in a fucking iron?? Jesus I'm amazed it even works with the engine on!

Look dude, it even says on the button that you press to turn it on, 100W engine off, 400W with it on. It's meant for charging power tool batteries, not running irons.

Not being a dick, but did you read the owners manual? Manual says it can be used without the engine on. It also says 400 watt max (button lights up with either 100 or 400 modes), but im guessing he saw a plug and didnt even think his iron actually draws 800+ watts to run.

■The power outlets can be used when
 Vehicles without a smart key system The engine switch is in the “ACC” or “ON” position.
 Vehicles with a smart key system The engine switch is in ACCESSORY or IGNITION ON mode.

It says the ratings right on the damn button in order to use the outlet. Do you fill your tank with off-road diesel as well?

Don't worry. I waxed my board in the parking lot with my truck on last season. Truck still runs fine. Outlet still works too.

I can’t believe that inverter runs that. I just looked at my waxing iron and it’s 850 watt. Don’t think I’ll try to run it in the bed of my pickup, but I’m curious if it would run my iron.

Its a regular iron for your clothes, but you use it to melt wax onto the bottom of your snowboard or skis. You then shave off the wax and sharpen the metal edges of the skis/board. It makes you go faster and slide on the snow better.

My dad had a whole setup in the basement when I used to do downhill racing. You could always tell when the next race was near because the house would fill with the smell of melted wax.

The portion of the manual you quoted above is regarding the 12V power outlets in the cab.

To use the bed outlet the engine must be running.

    77D6E6ED-3FA0-4A35-AF95-3FE99397F3BE.jpg

Edit: I was wrong, the engine doesn't have to be running to use the outlet. At least on my 2015.

True, it was right above the 120v part, didnt notice it was for 12v. But, ive used my outlet with the engine off, the manual says "the power outlet can be used when - the engine is running" doesnt say must be or only when the engine is running.

Here is a video of someone doing it without having the engine running.
