Thanks, it was a Ford and I've been itching to get note done on setup I'm working on but had to get 5 stitches in my hand due to a hatchet accident

Good news, it works!!! Bad news, it's so cold outside right now none of my adhesives are sticking to the window, so I've got the truck in the garage warming up.

I was able to shrink everything down to a 25mmx25mmx50mm package for the motor assembly, which means it will fit behind the seats with no modifications. Except for mounting the switch, you could literally stick this whole mechanism on your back glass and still have it out of sight.

I had a hell of a time finding 3mm m.5 screws, so I modified the motor mount instead to hold the motor in place with more common #4 screws. Here is a shot of what the entire assembly looks like, minus the longer rod. You could build this right now and have a powered window that will work, you just need to release the button before the window is fully open or closed. I should have video tonight once the truck warms up and I can get this stuff to stick to the glass. Next up is the electronics to handle the end stops, one button open and close and automatically closing when the truck is turned off.

OK gang, here is the first test video. Sorry for the potato quality, it's about 15F in my garage right now and I'm crammed in the backseat with a lab power supply on my lap and my phone resting next to my shoulder. A few things to keep in mind,

This is in no way as pro as Bens, but it also requires 0 modification to your truck. Two pieces of 3m adhesive and some power wires and you will have a sliding window

The Nylon is currently white, I will be dying that black

It's not nearly as loud as the video makes it sound, not sure what the deal is there.

The window is slow and hard to move because it's cold and wet, I expect it to go much faster as it warms up.

I promise a better video and a permanent mount soon. For those of you following along, here is your bill of materials

    • 3d Printed Motor Coupler in Nylon or ABS , $3.70 using shapeways.com
    • 3d Printed Motor Housing in Nylon or ABS, $17.88 using shapeways.com
    • 3d Printed Window Mount in Nylon or ABS, $3.77 using shapeways.com
    • a #10-24 all thread rod (home depot) $4.00
    • a #10 nut (home depot) $1
    • 3M mounting tape (home depot) $5
    • Some wire (your neighbors speakers) priceless
    • The 800 RPM small form factor motor from Amazon $13.99
    • 2 2mm set screws (home depot) $2
    • 2 #4-40 1/2 inch screws (home depot) $1

The grand total right now assuming that you have nothing and you are using shapeways for the printing is under $55. This will get you a hold down the button and the window moves power slider.

Next steps will be adding a microcontroller and end stops to get an automatic slider, but if you are in a hurry, this will get you there. Here is a picture of what the final assembly looks like. I added the second bit of bracing around the coupler to protect in the event that the set screw on the motor fails. [IMG]

Pretty nice, hard top see.. But looks to be way too slow. Maybe a faster motor ?

Right now it takes about 12 seconds to fully open or close the window, and honestly I'm good with that. I don't want to spin it too fast because it is just a bunch of homedepot hardware and 3d printed parts after all :) And in a week or so it will be an automated one touch open/close, so it's not like you'll have to hold a button down the whole time.

Going by your video, it could take ten or more seconds to close or open the window. Which is way too slow ! Try hooking up your 1200 rpm motor and see how much faster it would be ?
A one touch would be nice. But 12 seconds is just way too slow.
Time your side windows to see how long they take to go down.

I'll give it a shot when it's a bit warmer out, it's freezing out there right now.

    Just a few LEDs...
Since you're no longer attaching a rack to the window and moving it with a gear, you could mount the motor and screwblock lower down and then attach an arm between the block and the window frame. (if this makes sense the way I described it) This way the motor, screw and screwblock would be lower and out of sight.

Going back to the earlier design with the servo motor, if you were to attach the rack to the window frame, you could still drive it with a gear but on a shaft extension that would allow you to mount the motor lower as well.

In either case you probably want to build some sort of cover over any rotating parts such as the screw/block or the gear/rack. This would help prevent someone's long hair from getting tangled up in the mechanism.

I'm not trying to threadjack but I though you might want to build a little people protection in as well. :)
