yeah but even if he crawls under, than what? Dealer will not listen to him anyway, nor he can fix it since truck is on warranty. Kinda pointless.
If dealer mechanic could not see a leak, how much some guy not trained on the truck can find in couple minutes with out being able to unscrew even the skid plate in a fear of voiding warranty?

Do you have that "fear" in checking your vehicle? Do you really believe removing a skid plate would void warranty?
BlueT, I realize much of what you post is sarcastic. Try being a bit more helpful.

Here is the bottom line, the dealership has been under there 4 times looking for the leak. If they haven't found it do you think he will? Even if he does find it it's not like he is going to whip out his tool set and fix it, it is still going to the dealer. I'm not saying its a bad idea to try to find it, I am just saying that if he doesn't want to its not a big deal, its on Toyota to find it.

Ha, you guys are awesome and quite sarcastic but I somewhat enjoy the abuse :D:D. Literally just got off the phone with one of the service writers at the dealer. So yeah, they're replacing the rack and the power steering pump. I guess I'm excited? Honestly on a 40k truck with 200 miles this is fucking major red flag. Idk, I guess this will remedy the problem but seriously a new steering rack, already? Crazy....

I've never agreed with this kind of thinking. It's HIS truck and HIS headache. I would never think "oh well, it's
Toyota's problem to fix". If I could do anything to help relieve the burden that affects me directly, I'd do
whatever I could to help resolve it. The 1st time I saw the fluid missing that I knew was there the day before,
I'd have something under the truck over night to try and find the leak - to me, something so simple is a no
    brainer.

You never know with any new vehicle, its not necessarily that it is a 3rd gen (not sure if this part carries over) but occasionally defective parts slip through. No matter what you buy or who makes it, there will always be that one off that has a defect. It is the exception and not the norm. If a bunch of 3rd gens had this issue, then it would be a cause for concern, but it seems the only issues with these trucks are few and far between, plus they arent all the same so it cant be blamed on it being a new generation truck

I also would have been under that thing in a heartbeat checking every spot, but not everyone is like this. I do think that it is Toyota's problem to fix though, warranties are there for exactly this reason. 90% of people out there don't crawl under their vehicle when something is wrong, and that is why warranties and service centers exist.

The leak could have been internal in the steering rack, therefore, no visible external leak.

double check ALL of their frickin work. It's been said already, but don't trust the stealerships. I had the actuactor go out on my transfer case and it was replaced under warranty. Whoever worked on my car forgot to tighten the fill bolt on my transfer case and when I got home my truck was pissing oil. Always take the time to double check what they did, shit if I were you I'd check the torque on the 2 bolts holding your steering rack to the frame as soon as I get home. Also use up the free oil changes if you want, but it's really worth it to do maintenance stuff yourself. These trucks are easy to work on, there are write ups everywhere, and anyone can be a mechanic if they have the right tools/knowledge.

Could have been many things, I'd still have taken the few seconds to throw something under there
over night to help rule things out and try and help sort it out. To me, in the end, it's my truck and my
ONLY way to get around and get to work and no one cares more about that than me.

I do everything I can myself, even after someone repairs or replaces something
    I still check it again.

Hopefully that resolves your issue. Sucks that it's all happening so soon with the new truck man.

So, did they find a problem or are the just replacing it because they can't figure out what, if anything is wrong?

You are entitled to do all your own work and repairs on your vehicle you want. To each is own I suppose, however that's not my thinking at all. Obviously I could've done little simple things like put a piece of cardboard under the truck, but to me if I'm spending this kind of money on a brand spanking new vehicle it should simply just work, and if it's not then I personally believe it is toyota's responsibility to determine what needs to be repaired and do it. Call me lazy or whatever you may say, but I expect companies, especially one as huge as Toyota to make it right for me with limited or zero hassle.

More than likely they realized just like me and others said that its leaking inside the rubber boots. Once they squeezed crap came out... hence they replacing the rack...

They believe it was internal and possibly on the rack itself, the service writer stated. Also said that if they were going to start pulling the rack apart they are just going to replace it anyway. What do you guys think, should I keep the truck even though issues this somewhat major are coming up so soon? Please only constructive comments.
