Does anyone know of any good youtube videos or members who have done this before. I have a 2000 3.4l 4x4 5 speed that has a awful power steering whine. Checked fluid levels and they are good and don't seem to have any leaks but it sure whines pretty good. I have seen where a good flush and screen clean might help the issue but haven't come across any how to videos or threads with pictures that might assist me if I try it.

    here you go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0fiZCHz5ew

I never saw one just for tacomas but most vehicles are the same so this one applies to yours.

one thing I would add is before you empty the reservoir as the video shows, use the turkey baster as a pressure flush to loosen and get any sediments in the screen loose and free flowing suspended in the oil so you can suck them out with the fluid so like a toilet plunger stir the crap up before you start sucking out the fluid.

I did this the other day. Not sure if a turkey baster will work, it is a very small hole for the reservoir. I took the reservoir off in order to clean the screen better, three bolts and the return line. My screen was extremely dirty and had to use brake cleaner and carefully scraping it with a flathead screw driver. Not sure mine was ever done and it has 295k on it.

you can always add a hose on it to fit into smaller areas, turkey baster is only about 1" round but to get in the corners an added on hose to it is probably needed

I did a BG p. steering flush to mine after i replaced my pump because after installing the remanufactured pump i had a bit of whining. The flush took care of it.

If that doesn't cure the whine what kind of repair costs am I looking at for steering pump and rack and pinion?

the whine is because the screen is blocked with sludge and its not getting enough fluid, put new fluid and clean the screen and the noise goes away.

it has nothing to do with the rack.

go to rockauto.com to see prices on PS pumps but all you need to do is flush the crap out of the screen in it. the pump either works or it doesnt and a noisy pump just means the screen is clogged up.

I know everyone knows this BUT put ATF back in. When I got my truck the guy just had the ps pump replaced and filled it with power steering fluid. It's not a honda! I highlighted the ATF lettering on the filler cap.

I did my BG flush with synthetic atf. In my pic above you can see a can of brake cleaner, that's what i used to clean the screen during the installation of my pump.

Can I take the reservoir off without taking belts or the pump off?

Yes, there are 3 bolts. Two on the sides of the pump body, and one that must be seen thru an access hole in the pulley.

Cool man, let me know... I tried it and got fluid out but wasn't able to get the return line loose or bolts loose so didn't accomplish what I was after and got frustrated... Let me know what tools you needed and how it went.

if you want you can just pull the liquid out of the res then refill with new, drive then do it again. repeat 3 or 4 times. this is my plan if I can not get the return line loose.

Idk about you guys with the 3.4 but when I was experiencing problems with mine(2.7) the return line is just a low pressure hose connected to a nipple on the reservoir held on by a weak spring clamp....super easy to get off....
