Recently I have been struggling with my steering. At a stand still the wheel moves freely in both directions. If i apply any brake pressure it slowly becomes stiffer, until the wheel doesnt move at all. Any ideas?

Also I recently moved to colder climate, on colder mornings (less than 30). It takes some real arm strength to steer, even at 30mph. Not complete power steering loss, but probably 50%. Is this normal for anyone who has lived in colder climate?

Im not sure whats going on, but it definitely doesn't sound normal to me. I'd start by checking your PS fluid.

Is the pump making any sad noises when you're turning the wheel?

Fluid level is good, both hot and cold. The pump itself doesnt make any unusual noises, high pitched squeal if it touches full lock.

You may want to post up in the "What have you done to your Tacoma, first gen edition" thread. That's where all the first gen gurus are hanging out. They should be able to help you more than I can.

Well, just for grins I'd jack it up one wheel at a time then turn lock to lock & see if the left or right side has more drag somehow.
Maybe some sort of restriction in the valve body or a partially crushed line?

The wheels need to be able to roll when turning. Even if the truck is sitting still. Appling brakes will cause resistance to steering.
