can anyone explain the terrible screeching sound that's heard when i turn the steering wheel lock to lock...does the rack need attention or is it the pump? there is fluid in in the pump btw.

I'd try a full flush before anything and make sure you fill with toyota ATF and NOT power steering fluid

There is also a screen in the bottom of the power steering reservoir. If it's clogged then the pump will be starved of fluid and may be causing the noise. Here's what mine looked like after being cleaned:

I was replacing my P/S lines, so I drained the entire system to start. You can separate the reservoir from the pump and clean the screen without having to remove the pump. If the screen is dirty you can turn the reservoir upside down and spray some brake cleaner to clear it.

If you hear the screech only when the wheels have reached their limit of travel, try tightening the belt (or replacing it!) that wraps around the PS pulley before taking anything apart.

check your fluid and see it its really dark, and if it smells burnt. And then do all of the above, and don't forget it uses ATF fluid not power steering fluid. I'm just waiting on getting over a nasty sinus infection and a bit warmer day, and then I'm going to do the Timmy the Tool Man drain, check the screen, and flush mine out with new fluid since mine has turned dark and need to be replaced.
