I have a 2001 TRD. A few weeks ago my power steering went out. I changed the pump but that didn’t help. I next ordered a new rack and had it installed. Now power steering is fine but the pump makes a loud noise when I turn the wheels. (I had put power steering fluid in it where it should have been transmission fluid.) Transmission fluid was used with the new rack.
Mechanic says I might need a new pump so I just installed a new pump and the noise is still there. I have turned the wheels lock to lock several times and it doesn’t help. Anyone got any idea what to do?

Can you be more specific about when you hear the noise? Is it constant, only when you are actually rotating the wheel, or only when you approach full lock? A video of the noise would probably also be helpful.

The noise is mostly constant but is deeper in tone and louder when turning the wheels. Also when I hit full lock the noise stops. I’ll try to get a video later.

I started the truck and backed up and pulled up many times going from lock to lock. It was still making the noise. I just went out to get a video and noise is almost completely gone. I guess this time it just needed to get the air out of the lines.
    Thanks for replying.

I didn’t but realize that this is the one thing that’s been on each pump. I will pull it and clean it as soon as I can

I took the reservoir off and cleaned the screen with parts cleaner and so far it’s quiet as a mouse. Thanks for the advice!!!
