This is a horrible video and for that, you have my apologies. I tried to edit it but that is apparently a skill I lack. the first seven seconds have value. Then if you'll skip to the 40-second mark to the end I think you'll have 15 seconds or so of worthwhile content.

This is the power steering pump on my son's 1998 4Runner 3.4. There's a non-rhythmic rattle coming from the engine when it's running. I think that I don't hear it when the power steering belt is removed. Does the video show an unacceptable level of play in that pulley? Could that be my noise?

    Thanks for the help.

And I put the belt back on, and I can't hear the sound. Self-healing rattle.

There should be no play on the pulley .

I have the same pump loose for a 3.4 swap.

Has the pulley been off or has a recon pump with pulley been installed??

That the pulley worked loose ?

Worse case it moves enough it smokes the belt .

I don't understand. You have a pump doing the same thing?

I've never replaced this pump. Could be original. Could be replaced by a previous owner. I've had the truck 3 years. It has 223k miles.

I don't feel any wobble in the pulley but it does seem to go in and out a little. Can it be fixed or should I replace the pump?

I meant the pump is sitting on the shelf waiting for the swap to progress to the point it gets installed.

I am guessing it is not to the point the pump started to leak yet?

How did the pump feel when you were turning it by hand any rough spots ?

One of those things it might not get much worse for another 50,000 miles my luck it would quit in the worse place.

    It felt ok turning it.

I think I'll replace it. It's my son's truck and he's home from college right now. If it was mine and I had access to it to monitor it and fix it any weekend I would. It's a lot harder to solve problems remotely, especially when I'm not the one stranded if it craps out.

    Thanks for the help.
