Attempting a power steering pump rebuild on my 99 3.4l. Is this part supposed to be oval shaped? Looks like it has been worked into an oval. Started as a circle? Pretty scored around the whole thing as well.

    Awesome you are attempting rebuild

What is the purpose since they are readily available and fairly cheap?
    Just because you can?
Not trying to be smart A just curious

Seems like parts would be nearly same cost as new or rebuilt. Not to mention what my time is worth.

BTW, if that part ended up oval shape you are probably going to need a new one anyway

Bring on the smiley with the double birds :D

Well after looking at how much the ring is grooved I’ve decided to get a new one. I was able to source a car quest “new” one. The only reason I thought I would just rebuild it is because most aftermarket remanufactured pumps are hit and miss coming from reviews at every parts store and a lot of forums. Oem is obviously going to be the best but can’t save this one sadly. They make a $20 seal kit which I was planning on using to save some money. Oem new pump is $338 from my local dealer. Hopefully this carquest one will do the trick seems to be good quality.

Only reason for the double bird is because of the first comment on this thread. If they don’t wanna help why say anything at all. Looks like he just wanted to eat his popcorn while he waits for people to make fun of me for not having any prior knowledge of this part.

That is a possibility although I've never seen that emoji being used for that reason...anytime I've seen it being used is someone is about to get roasted lol. Not saying it's not a possibility though! I normally use the "watch thread" button in the top right corner or leave a comment like "I'm having an issue with mine as well...I hope someone can figure this out".

to answer your question... yes it is supposed to be oval shaped. That is how the fluid gets pressurized.

Thank you! After looking mine over it has some pretty big bumps and scoring inside of the oval so I think replacing the pump would be a better option. Going to add an inline filter as well.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
I wonder what kind of shape your Steering Rack is in whatever took out the pump had to come from some place?

Had you changed the ATF on a regular basis just curious?

The rack leaks a lot and has a lot of slop internally. I already bought an oem rack from Toyota and was going to see if I could rebuild the oem pump but that’s not an option anymore. Got a new pump from Atlantic just to need to put it on. I’ve been doing lca bushings and broke an alignment tab so waiting for parts.
