Is there anyway this can be fixed? It is so damn aggravating in school lines and drive throughs. You touch the steering wheel and the truck revs up 300rpm. You damn sure have to pay attention to it or you will run someone over. I'm gonna take it to the dealer and tell them about it on my next service.

its hard to know if its normal without seeing it but most cars will either rev up or rev down when the steering wheel is turned. just the extra load on the engine from the power steering pump. its normal. out of the 40 vehicles i have owned i can say that pretty much all of them do this. the new tacoma may be more touchy but i notice the same thing with mine. i just make sure that my foots on the brake if im at a stop and turning the wheel. i havent noticed mine lunching forward other than when you go from neutral to drive it sometimes will jump a bit if its still on high idle and warming up.

i mean there may be somerthing wrong but engines will change rpm with load changes and running accessories. just like when you turn the ac on most cars will dip in rpm since the ac pump will be locked and spinning.

Yea coming from a f150 to this Tacoma is a big change. My 3.5 ecoboost didn't do that kind of stuff. I guess it's because you can hear the engine in the Tacoma so much more than the f150.

    Hydraulic vs electric steering.

We have Hydraulic which is, just like anything else belt driven, a parasitic drain. Just like when your AC cycles on and off, your rpm may change when you're using the power steering. This has been true since hydraulic steering was invented.

Very normal, they used to use vacuum lines to flare the engine up.

If it didnt you'd be whining about how hard it is to turn the wheel in drive thrus. :sadviolin:

How will you run someone over? If you are stopped, then you are either in Park or have your foot on the brake (or clutch in and break in). Maybe I'm missing something.

It makes the truck surge forward when it revs up.

My foot is always firmly on the brake and it just revs slightly. My truck never moves forward, though. Like others, it is normal and I have had it from day 1.

It's got a torque converter. Torgue gets converted when it revs. Apply more brake.

I just bought a 2019 tacoma as is sitting at the dealer with 200 miles for a case to be opened with Toyota. Yeap mine surges when turning the steering wheel in park, drive, reverse or while driving. It does it when the engine is cold or hot. Tried a new one at the dealer and it does not surge while turning the steering wheel in park.
Also noticed down shifting and up shifting followed by a neutral dead spot and engine reving up. I'm disappointed with the 3rd gen Tacoma.

If this was normal, why would Toyota have issued a TSB for it?

My '18 suffers from it as well.

^This is one of those things with no right or wrong, but because enough people complained, Toyota made a software change to lessen the impact. That's why your post-TSB truck still does it, just maybe not as severely. There is an extra load on the engine from the PS pump - the engine needs to rev up a little to prevent lugging. Same with turning the A/C on. My 2010 did it. My 1999 Mazda did it. :notsure: One way to eliminate the effect would be to use an electric PS pump like the JL Wrangler, but it's heavier (pulley vs a big copper motor).

I don't think it's normal just that most people live with it and don't complain. I'll follow up with what Toyota is going to do.

The technician at Toyota stated that it's a characteristic of the tacoma but mine he does it more than normal. To me that means it's not normal. Tried a new one from the same lot and it is not so pronounced and doesn't do it in park. The service manager agreed. The technicians don't know what to do.

I could understand that if it had done it since day one and had not gotten progressively worse. In fact, I would go as far as to say that it didn't happen at all until I had 58-18 or 62-18 applied (my dealer didn't tell me which one they did...just that they applied an update). The last time it happened it was jumping 300-400 rpm...which seems excessive to me if it's by design.
