I know many people on here have posted about power steering problems, seemingly made worse by a flush, and not fixed with new parts. TW searches showed me it is most likely caused by a plugged screen at the bottom of the reservoir, and there are multiple threads about just removing the screen, or how to remove the reservoir and pump and clean the screen. There is even a quick and helpful youtube video about it https://youtu.be/GZwYbvwIQ4Y.

300 miles into a 2000 mile drive to report for fire duty, my power steering pump was squealing like a pig even on highway curves. Fortunately the 300 mile mark was my parents house, so I could try and figure out the issue. TW searches showed the screen issue, but only having one night to fix it meant that I could either stay up half the night working in a poorly lit garage to remove the pump and reservoir, cut the screen and send all the residue through my pump and rest of system (seemed like a bad idea, the plyer handle I stuck down in there came back with a quarter inch of crap on it), or find another method.
My brother and I attached a PVC connection to the end of a shop Vac hose, and attached an ink pen shaft to the connection with a little black tape to hold it all together.

I prepped the truck for a standard power steering flush (removed skid plate, put front of truck on jack stands, removed hose from the side of the res, drained by turning wheels lock to lock {I used the engine off method).

Then I simply vacuumed all the crap out off the screen. Holding my finger over the drain nipple provided extra suction. In a few minutes I went from being unable to tell there was a screen in there, to seeing exactly where there was a little residue left. To get around the edges I cut the pen shaft at an angle, and bent the PVC connection slightly. In ten minutes my screen was much cleaner than the one in the video linked above. After cleaning I flushed the system as normal with the help of my brother, and there is no whine, my turning radius is probably 30% better than at anytime since Ive owned the truck.

This is not a perfect method, its definitely the half assed way to go about it, and I would rather have been able take the thing apart, but for a quick fix, I thought I would share the method.
