I had to replace my steering rack and decided to do a power steering flush. I decided to remove the reservoir and clean the screen inside, and I’m glad I did! What I found was that my screen must’ve completely clogged and which resulted in the screen blowing open, leaving chunks inside the reservoir. I ended up purchasing a new reservoir and installing it.

Moral of the story, in a lot of write ups I’ve seen people argue that removing the reservoir and cleaning the screen inside it. If your doing the job I would HIGHLY recommend it, you never know what you’ll find!

I’d install a magnafine power steering filter as well. It easily attaches inline on your return line to your reservoir, and is equipped with a magnet and a filter element. I personally have one on my power steering, and transmission.

    I have mods
Agreed. Simple, cheap and reliable. I've also got one installed in my power steering system. You can see it mounted to the frame rail here.

About the size of a fuel filter? Nice!
I'm assuming the filter is Power Steering fluid spacific? Would I have to order the filter? Or do parts stores stock it?

It’s about 25 on Amazon and it’s agnostic to the fluid as long as hydraulic

I bought mine from NAPA, they had it in stock. It’s spec sheet says it can be used for either power steering, or transmission. If the filter media stops up, it also has a bypass. I use two of the same part number. One on my p/s and one on my transmission.
Back when I worked at the ford dealership, one of these came with every re-manufactured transmission that we installed. We rarely added them because we would be cutting a metal line to install it, and we were on flat rate. We just flushed the cooler, and let it ride.
Our trucks have rubber hoses, much easier to work with.
Yes, it’s about the same size as an in-line fuel filter.
