Power Tailgate Lock

Installed my pop and lock today. Used the posi-taps. Like someone said before "these things are awesome". Tapped green to green and blue to red. Ran the wire down the passenger side with the camera wire and in through the grommet under the passenger seat. It was really easy. Don't find the noise that bad.

Installed mine. Just got confused with the wiring part. I've watched 2 YouTube videos. I did it on the passenger side and connect green to green & blue to red wires. Btw i went the old fashion way in connecting my wires. Those wire splicer that came with it are worthless.

 

Just finished the Pop n Lock install on my new 2017 TRD OR. I decided to go up the driver's side because I wanted to put a switch to control the tail gate lock so that I can leave it locked when the other doors are unlocked and have it unlocked while the other doors are locked. An added plus it that when the switch is off I am saving wear and tear on the tailgate lock solenoid. First thing I did was to cut off the bullet connectors as I wanted to use posi lock connectors instead. Removed tailgate and removed access plate. Didn't want to drill holes in retainer pieces on truck and tailgate because it looks ugly and other still have had problems. It took more time but I disassembled the wire loom for the camera after removing the retaining clips and grommet retainer. After unwrapping and splitting the outer wire loom I found that there was an additional wire loom cover inside the outer cover. By removing this cover I was able to include the Solenoid wire and the camera wire in the outer loom and rewrap so that all looks like original when loom clips and retainers are installed. Ran power cable up drivers side and used fiberglass rod for fishing electrical wires to get over fuel tank with no problems. There is a rubber plug in the floor just to the rear of the drivers outside seat rail at the rear of the rail. Removed seat belt anchor bolt and B Pillar cover. Ran wire up thru rubber plug beside B pillar and continued up to drivers kick panel. Installed SPST round switch in the lower dash panel under the spare switch position and ran two wires from the switch down to the kick panel. Discovered that there were already T taps and blank connectors already attached to the proper wires from IC1 plug (a bunch of other wires also have t taps and spare connectors- I assume they are for Toyota approved accessory wiring). Attached one wire from the switch to black wire on IC1. Attached the other wire from the switch with a posi connector to the green wire from the solenoid wire. Attached the blue solenoid wire to the blue wire on IC1 connector. Turned on switch under dash and checked operation. Everything worked like a champ. Whatever position the tailgate lock is in, it will stay that way if the switch is turned off. When you turn on the switch and operate the locks the tailgate will follow as well. The circuit that you are tied into sends a plus 12V or -12V signal to operate all the lock solenoids which is why if yours doesn't work right you just reverse the connectors. This for a new 2017 TRD OR and apparently they have changed a few thing from earlier.

 

Just installed my tailgate lock works great and I really am glad I got this done. Only two issues I ran into was after all was installed the lock would unlock and unlock would lock. I switched the green/blue near the device and it works like it should. Additionally I could not get the plastic caps back on at the bottom of the tailgate and back of bed. All in all fairly easy for the electrically and mechanically challenged.

Everyone may know this but it's now an option from Toyota to have this installed. I got it on my Pro.

 

What did they charge you?

 

Yes, I did do those color, if they do not work you can flip it if you are using the t-taps. It will not damage the wiring if it doesn't work. But I did use the green to green and red to blue. Hopes this helps you.

Couldn't you do a wiring extension like they do with Harley's to save the wire? Looks like a similar molex plug, pop out the existing wire in the plug, add a short extension, plug back in, and splice into the extension wire. Then all you have to do to reverse it is pull the extension. Maybe not as nice as just unplugging, but probably cheaper.

 

Yes, you could do it that way but I wanted to be more convenient when I unplug it and tuck the wires away. If I had any electrical warranty that needed to be checked out or worked on, I don't want them to say the cause of my electrical problem was the pop and lock and it will make it look like I never touched it. Maybe I'm just over thinking it and wanted to be a better off safe than sorry situation.

I got the Pop & Lock and just had my local car stereo place install it. They said they do them all of time. Having a locking tailgate is probably the best thing I could have done and it's must if your have a bed cover. I love being able to use the factory remote to lock and unlock it. Never realized how much I went in and out of the bed. Pulling that little key out of the remote gets old quick and its a pain in the a$$. Now they can't steal your tailgate because it will always be locked. Mine even auto locks in case I forget to lock my truck. Not sure how to disable that feature if you need to.

 

I just got a new to me 2014 Tacoma. My husband will never take the time to go through all these posts, so I did. I don't understand the two different approaches, going up drivers side or passenger side. Watched 2 really good videos for each. Did not look like any drilling was involved in either video. So what is the benefit of going up one side versus the other?

Which side you choose, Drivers or Passenger, will depend on what command the tailgate will unlock. Some members have their remotes programmed to unlock the drivers door on the first press, and the other doors on second press. If you connect to the passenger side, first press will not unlock tailgate.

 

Thanks. Having said that, which in your opinion is the less complicated (as far as exposing and pulling wire)? Two clicks or one click doesn't make a difference to me, as long as it locks and unlocks.
