    Hello,

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned (I didn't feel like reading the entire thread) but i thought i would chime in as I did the power tailgate lock mod about 3 months ago.I have some drawers in the bed that i wanted to be secure when I lock the truck without using the manual key.

Below is the link of the exact product i purchased ($87.00 on Amazon Prime). The nice thing about the kit was that it came with all of the wiring, connectors, and zip-ties needed for the complete install. The kit mounted to the tailgate using an existing bolt so there is not drilling or cutting. The instruction that came with the kit were very vague but I found a PDF of some instructions for installing this kit with some good pictures that made the install a breeze (took an hour). I would be happy to send the instruction I found to anyone or to answer and questions about the install.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LST3022/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

On a side note, I chose to tie into the driver side door lock so that it would unlock with 1 click of the fob and it does unlock with the sensor on my door handle. I love it!

    Hope this helps!

Yes, that's what I did. Worse case is if it's backwards, you can just flip the bullet connectors that are in the tailgate

Here's my notes from my 2016 DCLB TRD OR install. Connects it to the passenger door circuit. That way you can have it unlock with first or second click depending on your software settings.

Are you guys using diodes to stop someone from activating the passenger door locks by simply putting 12VDC on the wires you guys ran outside the cab?

It's the black plug in your first picture. Green to green, Blue to red. This will make it work with the passenger door.

I did the passenger side kick panel. The pix I took are of the passenger side.

@dilbert had it right. Black plug, the lowest connector. Green to green, red to blue. Easy as pie!

@Double Phister no diode, why bother? Thieves aren't going to probe wire bundles with 12v, they are wrapped and there are a few of them anyway. Easier just to use a dent puller on the lock and take the tailgate that way.

I was more concerned about them opening up the passenger doors. But I guess it's easier to use a brick.

Can someone explain the difference between tapping into the passenger side white plug or black plug?
Seems both work based on replies here and video online.

I cannot explain the difference, but I used the driver side and it worked flawlessly.

Can you post where you found the pdf, all I'm finding is that companies instruction sheet.
I'm still considering the cheap0 route, but mounting the actuator is the most important.

These are some decent instructions. It's attached to the driver's door circuit though.

Cool, thanks for that. Mounting the actuator seems like the most important part, otherwise it'll just come loose.

It sounds like all you'd have to do is connect it to the wires the OP mentioned for the pass doors.
I'd still like to change the tailgate cable to one that doesn't have the quick release tabs, that and locking it would help.

I just tried installing the Pop & Lock PL8535 and read most of the relevant diagrams/discussions on here and am a bit lost. I just got a 2017 Tacoma 4 door Sport, everything is installed and ran to the cab at this time. The clips that came w/ the wires are o.k. for a one-time use, but it looks like after 4 or 5 attempts I'm going to have to find some more connectors to attempt the connection. I've tried connecting the wiring in a variety of ways based on several YouTube Videos, the PL8535 Toyota Tacoma 2016 Pop and Lock - Install Instruction, and reviews on Amazon giving a variety of connection models. I've tried connecting to the black connector chassis, to the white connector chassis and haven't had any luck at all. Everything I've seen/read is "close" but nothing is exactly as the truck wiring is showing. Pop and Lock's website doesn't even have instructions for the 2017 Tacoma (that I could find). 2015 and '16 - but no '17. Further up in the conversation at https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/power-tailgate-lock.393110/page-28#post-16319507 there's a link to an Amazon conversation - but the link doesn't go to the review.

And of course their support is closed on Saturday's. So if anyone has any good reference material I'd be extremely grateful as I'd like to get this finished up this weekend.... after I buy some more connectors.... :D

I've seen a few posts about the pop n lock not working after a couple of months. This also happened to me and I just dealt with it. Finally took time to look at it and got it fixed and figured I would share.

Issue: would unlock reliably but would not lock (even though I could hear it trying to).

Solution: opened up the tailgate, noted that the mechanism on the actuator was slightly off set so that the portion that would unlock the lever was slightly in closer contact than the portion on the "locking" side.

Threw on a bunch of lube/grease, noticed it moved more smoothly, but still had the same issue (reliably moved to unlock position but no the lock position). Would move the lever sometimes about half way to the locking position but not fully engaged, and using the tailgate handle would slide it back to the unlocked position.

The pop n lock is seated on a plastic stem and bolted into place with 1 bolt, which gives is a tiny pivot point. I loosened the bolt and applied slight counterclockwise rotation and tightened back down. This approximated the lever just enough to reliably move it to the lock position. Have used it for a few months now, absolutely no issues.

Very simple fix and wish I would have looked at it sooner. Just hoping this may help a few of you.
