Power to turn camshaft?

    Does anyone know offhand how much engine power is required to turn the camshaft on, say, a 2.7 16-valve engine? Just something I got to wondering about, google didn't even turn up anything useful, maybe my search terms were off. Some engine person must know this, thanks in advance.

    Never thought about something like this. The cam is probably easy to turn since it is on bearing but the valve springs would require the most energy to open.

    1.1 kw = about 1.5 hp, I would think it takes more than that. Yeah, it would be the valves opening that would require the power. I suppose the springs on the closing valves would give some boost to the rotation of the camshaft, maybe 1.5 hp would be enough, I have no idea.

    I would think the answer is that it does not take a lot of power/force for the engine to turn the camshaft.

    A camshaft not attached to it's timing belt/chain is moveable by hand. I had to torque a camshaft bolt to 36 ft. lbs and had to secure the cam so that when I was tightening the bolt, the cam wouldn't just spin.

    It shoudn't be difficult to put a ratchet & socket on the crankshaft bolt and be able to turn the engine over.

    I dunno....get a beam type torque wrench and socket, put it on the crank bolt and see where the reading is at when the engine starts to turn over.
