I have a 2002 Toyota Tacoma Prerunner access cab and my driver's side power window seems to be slower and more belabored than the passenger side. How do I determine whether I need the window regulator with motor or just the motor? Thanks for your help!

With the window about half way down, grab the top edge and see if it wiggles a little. Should be able to move it up and down and forwards and backwards about an 1/8 inch, fairly easy. If it's hard to move it around it may have a peace weather-stripping that's binding it.

The contact points in the switch can build up crap on them over the years. I've had success on my cruisers taking the switch out and apart and cleaning the crap that builds up. I'm manual windows in the taco, so not positive, but Toyota generally stays fairly similar on those types of things. Just a possibility, might be worth checking before buying anything.

Yep best to take the door panel off and take a looksee. There is a possibility that It's gunked up or guides are worn. Or the regulator tracks are messed up. Usually you'll acquire squealing noises or whatnot of its the regulator though. But it sounds like it's the motor. Been a while since I looked at prices, but keep in mind you might be able to get the whole motor and regulator assembly for cheaper or about the same price of the motor. I got mine (regulator and motor combo) on eBay for around $40 iirc and it seems to be holding up good. But my seals to the door are Crap (no plastic liner and felt strips up too are garbage) so that needs to be fixed as well to prevent further degradation of the parts exposed to the elements. So again I would take the panel off and do an inspection. It's fairly easy to take the panel off, and just look inside and see how it looks. If everything is good and fairly clean, then you can get by with minimal worry and parts. Or just get the motor or whatever you need, and plan on tidying up whatever else asap if need be.
