I COULD add GL to OVTune (which I have editable files for my ECU) but I don't have the editable OVTune files for the truck I was using for the dyno runs (the most stock taco any of my friends own). I just had the .p5f files.

Here is the proof! Top chart is HP and Torque. Max torque at high RPM and WOT was about 12ft-lbs better, but most of the lower RPMs it's a steady 20ft-lbs better than stock. HP is max 20hp higher. All testing was on Reg gas, since I wanted to be able to tell the 'average' PowerThirst customer what they can expect.

Bottom chart is AFR, with the target (dotted flat line) set at 12.7. You can see that blue (PowerThirst) tracks at about 12 for most of the run, whereas stock is WAY too lean then blows past target to being too rich. Getting this balanced better is my goal for the next dyno runs, which should be next Wednesday!

    @PapaRee , @TermLimits , @Chadr7858 , @uploadadventure @Mooseditty17 I know you guys have been itching to see these!

First off, nice work. I too have had a similar recent experience of going into dyno runs blind and new/dumb to it. It’s a freaky yet awesome and humbling learning experience.

    A few questions:

    1. Why does the stock pull start 700 RPM higher?

    2. That stock AFR looks really strange. My experience didn’t show that shape at all on the stock tune. Did the dyno shop have any input on that?

*edit - added the stock tune dyno run on totally stock 2020 04B81 ECU, 91 oct.

    **edit edit
    3. Was that a totally stock truck in the dyno?

So this shop is HPTuner (GM tuning) only, and since you can't even plug in HP Tuner on a 3rd gen Taco to log data, this is all with a tailpipe sniffer, so YMMV, apparently. He was pretty confused at seeing that as well, but really had no comment on it, since he's never had a Toyota on the dyno ever.

As for starting the pull at a higher RPM, I did the stock runs first, so that was me just getting into 4th gear, and not slowing it down once gearlocked in 4th before flooring it for the pull. Chalk it up to me being a noob on the dyno.

Got it. The shop drove all the pulls for my stupid noob experience. They also just used the TP sniffer and couldn’t plug in. I added another question above. Was that a stock truck on stock wheels/tires?

Yes, it was a totally stock TRD Offroad 04B81, stock wheels, stock tires. Well, dude's got a low profile bed rack and a rooftop tent, but that's it! The Dyno is probably the ONLY place that doesn't slow you down haha.

Never know, they put some big fans in those dyno bays

You’re basically at sea level in Austin, right? The run I posted above was totally stock DCLB OR at ~4200 ft above sea level. It was a 2020 O4B81 also.

One thing I came away from my dyno experience with was a whole lot of things I’d do differently.

Thank you for sharing. So I wonder what causes variations in dynos. There’s a very public dyno with stock tune on premium at 230hp and 219 torque. OVtune on reg is 235hp and 229 ft/lbs

My theory is there are more dynos than people that know how to use them…

    Good work Brody!
Fun to look at numbers, I am glad that you are getting to learn from that Dyno guy.
Maybe he can help with a FI base tune for Supercharged trucks and ProCharged trucks.

That could be the case. I just looked up the VFtuner dynos and it shows stock 246hp/232lbft with an increase of ten for both when tuned

@DownhillDragon and I have been in contact for a little bit. Dude has some great ideas.

If he or anyone else for that matter is down for bouncing ideas or experimental files off one another, I’m down.

EDIT: I’m working on a new pedal and airload vision. Seems to be going well with heavy trucks and 5.29s

Brody and I talked last week and he is a great guy, just trying to make these trucks more fun to drive--just like me.
Jeff is also a very nice guy and easy to talk to.
We all have one common goal, to make Tacoma's better!

I’m between tacos now so I’m not much use as a tester. As an engineer I’m pretty good at analyzing charts and data though.

I’ll share the biggest thing I learned from my dyno day: WOT pulls mean nothing for addressing the shitty drive-ability of the stock Tacoma tune. That drive-ability is the biggest issue with the Tacoma, not lack of power.

Yeah, I honestly miss the Open-source days at the start, trying out and digging through each other's recent versions to see why things worked or didn't work, what we liked and didn't like, and then trying to improve our tunes even more. I think I quoted Isaac Newton to one of you guys recently in a chat, when he was asked why he was able to progress science and mathematics so much in his lifetime, "If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants." We were all kinda standing on each other's shoulders for a while there, and now in the locked-file days, we've all branched off in different directions. I honestly love the friendly competition, since I genuinely respect and like all you guys in the 3rd gen tuning scene. When someone asks me if I can do the KDMAX tune, I tell them I could, but that I won't do them the disservice of missing out on PowerThirst ;-)

And like many, the only reason I got into this was to make MY truck better haha... making other people's trucks better just allows me to buy more truck stuff and donate to offroad events and charities. I've vowed I'll never pay myself for tuning... unless I quit my real job someday haha.

But yeah, a Supercharger purchase is def coming up soon, and since neither Mat nor Magnusson will share an unlocked tune file for it, I'm going to HAVE to build my own, since I can't afford to lose what I like about my tune just to get aftermarket parts. I'll definitely try theirs and see how they did. Hopefully Mat is kind enough to offer advice or review my tunes so I don't blow anything up.

You're 100% correct, and I put some thought into that. I think there is definitely a lot to learn from just getting on the dyno and cruising in 4th at different RPMs to see if there are incremental power (and thus MPG improvements) to be had.

I 100% agree. It's not lacking power. Just lacking the usability of what it has. Everyone here has played a role in accomplishing this. Testers and tuners alike. Keep up the great work fellas! We'll see "soon" what OVTune is bringing to the table. If he unleashed the power, we damn sure can maximize it's usability if he hasn't already.
