I have ran datalogs on my 2020 with my MPVI so yes it does work but does not have extensive pids. I would have to go look and see what but I believe I was logging tps vs app to watch the torque management....

 

Since I have ZERO experience with HPTuner, the dude plugged in but couldn't really see anything, so we gave up quick. I just bought the HPTuner setup myself, but honestly haven't even had time to crack it open and plug it in yet! Hoping to use that for 2nd gens, once I have a guinea pig truck (or just buy a second gen myself, when used car prices settle their asses down a bit)!

If you like to tune Hptuners is certainly a great tool. I have had it for 6 years or so and use it quite a bit.
I wish they had taken time to get access to the 3rd gen ecu.
Like I was saying I was using it to log tps vs app on mine. My truck looked like a computer lab when I was tuning it.
I had a laptop with my tuning software, hptuners mpvi, and my snap on scanner to datalog all the parameters that I couldn't get otherwise.

 

Yeah, it can get nuts with all the gear you have to use...

There's a Toyotas in Texas meet up in Bryan, TX this Sunday! I'm stoked to meet more Taco dudes. I know I'll be doing a few tunes, but not there to work, just to have some fun!

 

So just wanted to shoot out a quick update... I'm currently working on PowerThirst 2.4, which takes advantage of some of the latest updates VFTuner made for AFR and some other goodies. I've also got a Magnusson Supercharger on the way, so I'll get to have some fun trying to build SC tune on top of PowerThirst, which I'll make available as a single-license tune for people who want more from their Magnusson SC, once it's well tested.

Next Houston trip is planned for the Sept 19th, and I'll be getting the word out (and the poster for social media) asap!! Got a few tunes lined up for today, plus going to finish the speaker install in the truck.

 

To ya’ll 2.7 2016 3rd Gen owners you better get your trucks tuned! I just had mine last Sunday. And yes it’s amazing! I’m getting 23-24mpg on hwy and 18-19 on city. no gear hunt, i feel the 6th gear kicking in. Thank you @DownhillDragon!

Update for Brody and anyone interested - tuned about a week ago with PowerThirst... Definite positive changes. 2017 DCLB TRD OR with bumper, shell, winch, roof racks, sliders, DIY drawers in back (LOTS of weight)... after about 3 days gained 2-3 mpg on highway, will consistently hold speed on the highway with no gear searching, and eliminated almost all lag with quick accelerations from a stop or merging on a highway. went from about 13-14 MPG on highway at speed to 16-17, but more importantly it is just more enjoyable to drive and doesn't endlessly annoy me any longer! Totally worth it, would recommend to anyone.

Haven't bumped this thread in a while, but I'll be working on an updated 2.7L 3rd Gen tune later today. If this new version goes well, (which I imagine it will since my first iteration was well received), it will be available to license for individuals or Pro Tuners very soon. Pricing TBD, but won't be much, not trying to get rich and I know y'all need it!!!

The PowerThirst v2.4 Tune for all 3rd gen 3.5L trucks is available on request as well, and is running on about 70 trucks here in TX. I've never been a big fan of licensing my work, but since I've re-tuned enough people with other tunes who reported back positively, I figure it's time to bite the bullet and open it up to the masses! So for people outside of TX, just PM me or email me at downhilldragontuning @ gmail for details. Email is probably quicker!

** Also in the works is a new Magnuson Supercharger tune, which will be getting some road logging time this week, and some dyno time in the coming weeks (need to book it).

Once the SC tune is done, next project will be a Lexus RCF tune!! First pass will be for stock RCFs, then I'll be installing Headers/Exhaust and doing another pass.

Are you able to provide .bin files for those of us with OV Tune handheld units?

 

Never tried, but I don't believe so, it seems that .VFC files are the only thing the latest versions can export. That's something I can ask Mat about.

 

Seems like this handheld is just a useless brick after the very first 2.0beta OV tune... what a shame.

Are the people that are doing this and seeing good results regeared or no? just looking for more information. I’m running stock gears and 285/75r17. inclines can give high rpms and the truck overall is a little sluggish, but it’s manageable. mpg went from ~18 to ~15. is this something viable for someone on stock gears to help rpms/mpg, or should i just be regearing (which i’m trying to avoid bc it’s $$$.) & yes i knew these deficits would come with a lift/tires, just looking at options, and i’m in the san antonio area so Pflugerville is not too far of a drive.

 

Brandon, I'd say that 95% of the Tacomas I've done are on stock gears. I've done plenty on 4.88s and 5.29s as well, and either way is a huge improvement. I always recommend giving tuning a shot before regearing, as it will fix almost every complaint on the stock tacoma. Worst case, if you DO still decide to regear down the road (which I'll always recommend if you're a REALLY heavy truck, you tow a lot, or you do a lot of low-speed rock crawling), just come back and I'll retune for the new gears free of charge. I don't want people to stop upgrading their truck out of fear of having to pay to retune. Everyone should follow their own path down the rabbit hole of Tacoma upgrades haha. Let me know if you want to get your tune scheduled! I'll be out of town this weekend, but will be tuning next Tuesday and Sunday.
