I've got a '17 TRD OR, 6MT. I've had the usual suspect TSB/recall things done (leaky brake light, squeaky springs, howling rear end, fan motor), but overall have been pleased with the truck. My question is this: Are there any glaring powertrain issues that I need to have looked at before the powertrain warranty runs out? I'd hate to hit 61,000 miles and the motor take a dump, or the rear end come apart. I'm at 58,xxx right now, so time is getting short......

It does have what I'd call a pronounced "lifter tick", but that could be attributed to the VVT I guess. Other than that, it's pretty solid from what I can tell.

    Thanks for the help!

Take your truck into a reputable, local, non-manufacturer auto-shop with high independent ratings... have them examine the vehicle’s powertrain for any issues that might be covered under the remaining warranty. That may cost a few dollars, but you’ll have piece of mind... by going to an outside repair facility, you’re removing any Toyota “that’s normal” bias related product protection.

just to be clear, you are NOT having any symptoms? drivetrain is running smooth consistently? if it ain't broke...

what's the lifter tick you referred to? never heard that term.

You can rule out the lifters because there aren’t any.

I grew up piddling around a local shop with Dad (shop owner & Dad were good friends), working on my old 72 Ford truck, or a 73 International Scout. I learned a little about a lot, and knew just enough to be dangerous. Back then you could still work on a truck without fear of frying anything and becoming FUBARed. Lifters ticking (or clattering), rods knocking, etc, all had a distinct sound. Same with wheel bearings, or ball joints. We were the "tear down" crew. Pull the motor out, set it in the floor, and go to town. Those were some fun summers......

To answer your first question, no I'm not having any issues or symptoms right now. At times, the shift into 2nd can be a little herky jerky, but that's about it. Just wanted to pose the question and make sure I hadn't missed anything.

    got it.

are you aware of the TSB for the MT ECU's? came out earlier this year and helps significantly with smooth motor operation and has been known to help with 2nd gear shifts on many trucks, especially 2017 and before. you'll have to search around or post up in any of the MT threads for some info or search help.
