    Chile is one of the most seismically active places on earth actually. It is where the Nazca plate is being pushed underneath the South American Plate.

    The difference is that Japan has the money and technology to have designed their buildings to withstand strong earthquakes, while smaller, less affluent countries such as Chile and Haiti, do not have the luxury of being able to do so.




    This website shows all of the earthquakes that have occurred in the past 5 years...you can see just how many have occurred in both Chile and the Caribbean.
