Is there any way to retrofit the pre '01 grille to the '01-04 Tacos? The only thing I don't care for on my '02 is the vertical slats on the grille setup. I've considered going to a billet type, but really don't care for them all that much. If one of the earlier cannot be retrofitted, I guess I will have to come up with something on my own...

Well, that shoots that idea. I'll see what I can come up with.

Have you considered a mesh or expanded metal - style grille insert?

The thing is, I like the materials the stock grill is made out of, ie. the bars (plastic), I just like it when grilles run horizontal instead of vertical. If I can find the right material, I'm going to come up with something. I like the honeycomb mesh look behind solid bars, that's the look I'm trying to achieve.

Keep us posted, it sounds good, will you go deep dish style too? Closest thing i have seen is the custom Satoshi grille.

use a black micro mesh. look it up and the way to mount it is pretty simple. what i thought of is when you cut out the bars find a spot you can run the mesh peice too and when you do so epoxy a bolt to the plastic part of the grill then drill a whole in the mesh and bolt it up.

does any one get what im saying. im sure if i drew it out it would be even simpler.:)

This is the look I am trying to achieve, or something close; I'm not trying to make my Tacoma look like a Tundra, I just like the grille layout better:

I personally like the grill of the '01-'04s. Maybe not just the grille, but the whole front clip. I had a pre-'95 Toyota Truck and hated the Tacoma when they first came out. Once they added the new-look front clip in '01 I loved it. I'm also like you and don't like the billet grille look. I like the "chunkier" grille sections that our trucks have. I would, however, like to see if you could come up w/ something like that Tundra grille pic. That might actually be kinda cool. Post some pics if you ever get it done.
