Bends in the road confuse the sensors if tight enough. Cruise control and PCS.

I get a false alarm in the same exact place on the highway on my way to work VERY intermittently (like once every 6-8 months) and it has never actually applied the brakes. Someday I'm gonna figure out why it does that.

EDIT Oh and road as straight as can be and open except for an overpass but I go under 15 on that road everyday and actually it did it to me a week ago and I swear I was pretty much under that overpass.

I have not had the PCS apply the brakes in the instances explained by OP.

The 2 situations where the alarm went off, I had already began to apply the brakes because I was approaching too fast.

So, in those instances where I see the sudden stop approaching fast, PCS will sound the alarm--but I applied the brakes quicker than the system could.

Page 267 of the owner's manual explains DRCC and TSS.

The system works as advertised even with an aftermarket vintage grill/garnish. I test it every time I can.

I'm glad OP avoided a sticky situation.

I have had mine give what I would call a brake tap going under an overpass with a very high contrast shadow under it. Was a quick tap, I assume the system was computing it all out. My wifes Outback doesnt do it. Not a big deal to me.

Some of this stuff reminds me of years ago when seatbelt laws were enacted. I saw a guy I went to high school with in a restaurant, beat all to shit, walking on crutches, one wrist in a cast, skint (Texas word) up something bad. Asked WTF? I got the whole story, he rolled his car, it threw him through the passenger side window (which was rolled up) into the ditch then the car rolled over the top of him. Only reason he wasnt crushed to death was he was in the ditch and the car wasnt. I told him, shit I bet you'll be wearing that seat belt from now on. He got a completely dumbfounded look and said fuck no, I could have smashed my face in to the steering wheel.

My take away, other than he was a whole stupider than I remembered was, I guess it's all in your priorities.

Ours works as I'd expect it to. Tested it when we first bought it... put it in cruise control and it kept a decent distance between us and the car in front. There's enough room for cars to move in front and when that happens it slows a little, then some more until the same distance is achieved. Always slows appropriately and sped up as expected. While covering the brake I've followed cars off of the freeway and it slows and brakes as needed, all the way to a full stop.

Recently installed an OEM Trail Edition grille with a (couldn't stomach Toyota's OEM TSS garnish price). Had read stories about relocating the sensor and/or aftermarket TSS garnish being problematic. Took it out and tested it in the same ways and it still works perfectly. More than happy to have it brake, beep or whatever if it saves me from an accident. :)

One of our best friends has a Tesla that'll take over for you. That still scares the  outta me though.

Be mindful that the brake! events are logged and may be used to duck out of warranty coverage.
Its a little unsettling when the tech guy makes assumptions about your driving habits when you are bringing it in because its frequently going off in the same S shaped road lined with parked cars all the time on a very narrow street. Not a tailgater but that's what mr magoo the 'master' tech surmised..

Aside from premature brake wear, how would a "BRAKE" log void warranty?

It was only a few years ago my brother got rid of his flip phone and upgraded to a smart phone. He was once in the mountains with some friends who couldn’t get a signal with their smart phones. He took out his flip phone and pulled up the antenna and they all laughed, but he got a signal lol. He swore by that thing!

I would still have my close-enough-to-flip non-smart phone, but it was only 3G and cannot connect now. Sadness ...

Y’all gotta get off your instaspam and tweeter and watch where you’re driving. You don’t need a nanny to drive safely!

I don’t have it, but my wife’s RAV4 does and I’ll admit it’s pretty cool how well it does work.

That happened to me a while back. Throttle was pegged to get ahead of the car on the left and as I looked in the side view mirror the car in front of me kind of brake checked. Truck cut throttle and braked. Nice dose of reality, honestly... This was in my other 3rd gen, not sure how my new manual does it.

I kinda like all this nanny stuff - keeps me alert especially when I cross the line.
If only I could turn off the seat-belt-chime if doing less than 20mph... jumping in and out of the truck to shoot images
makes it a pain - wildlife doesn't take direction and sit-still for long. Might buy one of those fake buckle things for when
I'm out on dirt roads going low and slow looking for critters.

They were trying to get me to pay for the service, saying that toyota wouldn't cover it
i brought it in for the slip yoke clunk and hesitant acceleration but we never got that far, they were too baffled for 2 days by grease trails on the underside (oil filter cap needed a 1/4 turn...) and the sensor logs...

B/c When they review the logs it doesn't show 'BRAKE', it shows precollision sonar tripped along with other sensors saying brake and gas applied at the same time.
I'm not double footing the truck but the logs say that i am and the tech was very quick to lay the blame on driver operation.
A little common sense would discern that the pre collison is applying the brake while my foot is on the gas but that is too much to ask for a tech at the dealership.

When you are rolling along looking at wildlife and don't catch the steering wheel in time to avoid tumbling and flipping into a ditch at 10mph, you'll wish you had buckled in :D
